I find whenever hypomania or mania hits me, I suddenly don't have much appetite. It doesn't even have to do with my past with an eating disorder. I just don't eat much, am not hungry, find it a pain to stop for meals and just keep going & going on little food. This isn't good as I actually am experiencing hypomania right now and need to gain some weight to get back to a low-normal weight for my height. I skipped breakfast this morning without even noticing and had to force myself to stop for lunch. Luckily, I have seen the pdoc today, and we are going to try to get my sleep & anxiety under control as well as up the Lamictal and maybe change the dosage of the Seroquel I take at my appointment with him next week. I find it odd, too, because I just feel like I burn more calories when manic, yet I eat less and don't even notice it.
What is your experience with appetite during mania/hypomania? Do you eat more, less, or the same? |

I eat less...don't even think about food for the most part. Every spring and summer I'll lose 10-15 pounds just from lack of appetite (which I gain back in the fall and winter because all I do is stay inside and eat carbs). I also tend to eat more salads and fruit in the warmer months so that accounts for some of the weight loss too. Sometimes I don't know which starts which---do I eat less because I'm manic or do I get manic because I'm eating less? The chicken or the egg? Same thing with caffeine.

I’m hungry but food is disgusting to me and I have to force myself to eat.

I usually eat less during mania and hypomania, because I have all this energy and the restlessness interferes with my appetite. I also have problems eating when I have anxiety. With depression, I snack a lot more.

No appetite. None. If I don’t weigh myself daily I’ll get frightening thin. And being thin makes me more manic. And I get fat when depressed. And of course getting fat also makes me depressed.

I eat far less.
I didn’t used to know what was going on. I just knew sometimes I would lose weight, and I needed to “wait for it.” |

Like others, in full manic mode, I can’t be bothered with food. I keep energy bars around because I know that I need to eat.
I was once down to 112 pounds. Not very healthy. Now, having a downward swing, I’m eating compulsively. I’m over 160 pounds and feel fat. Ugh.

My appetite is always poor. I dont have an eating disorder, I just get too tired to bother with eating regularly.
Ive actually LOST weight on all my meds which is rare. I lean more depressive than manic/hypermanic though |

I'm so hyper-focused on things that I don't eat. What I do eat is junk because I need quick energy. If it weren't for feeding the family I wouldn't eat much at all.

Forcing myself to eat lunch, forgot to eat breakfast, but in my defense, I was in a fender bender car accident this morning. Having a tough time of it though.

I tend to eat a lot when hypomanic. Unless it's the irritable kind. I lose my appetite with depression and anxiety.

—I am hungry most of the time, even when hypomanic, unless busy. Tried Latuda, lots of side effects for me. One of them was that it made many foods taste different than usual and disgusting to me. Still liked junk food and fast food as I always do , unfortunately.

A lot of money gets spent on going out to eat. A lot of money gets spent on buying food from the grocery store too.
I tend to drink more coffee and soda also. |
