Hi,

I've been undergoing a mixed state for the past few days with hypomania being more problematic. I keep waking up in the middle of the night which is what I believe triggered the mixed state and is keeping it from resolving.

What do you do when you are in a mixed state or hypomanic? Also, what do you do when you have trouble sleeping through the night?

Mixed states are hard to deal with. I don’t know what if any Meds you take. If you do ..do you have any Meds that you can take on an as needed basis when you’re having trouble sleeping?

For mixed states I see the doctor and get meds to deal with it, isn't any home remedy I know of.

Mixed states are my predominant mood episode. Geodon and Lamictal help me the most, I think. And Klonopln, too. I hope you feel better.

When I'm in the middle of a mixed or hypomanic episode I call my doctor . She mainly increases the dose of my antipsychotic for sleep which is one of most important things when you are in a manic/hypomanic/mixed episode.
Did you get in touch with your psychiatrist? If you didn't I suggest you to see your doctor immediately.
I hope you recover as soon as possible

Thanks for your responses! I couldn't get in touch with my psychiatrist until today so I did a video appointment with a doctor through Amwell. He told me to take 2 25mg tablets of Benadryl. I tried it and it worked. He also told me I was going to bed too early (9:45) and told me that if I'm going to wake up between 5 and 6, I should go to bed at 11. Going to bed that late makes me a little uncomfortable.

I didn't want Benadryl to be a long term solution so I talked to my psychiatrist today and he prescribed Ambien. I started off with 1/2 tablet and woke up at 2 am. Tomorrow I'll try one tablet and see if that helps. I did go to bed around 9:30 tonight. If increasing the Ambien doesn't work then I'll take the doctor's suggestion and sleep at 11.

My mixed episode is calming down a little but I just don't feel great at all.

I feel nervous about going to bed late too. But if I go to bed at 9:45 I wake up at like 4 to 6 in the morning. Then my husband freaks out thinking I’m getting hypomanic.

I'm glad you were able to get ahold of your doc, meds are godsend when it comes to mixed mood states and not sleeping.

I’m already a sleepwalker as it is, so I’m leary of ambien.

I’m a fan of Benedryl, but AP works much better.

11 p.m. to 5 or 6 a.m.? Wow, that's not very much sleep. I wouldn't be able to function on only 6 or 7 hours.

I'm glad the Benadryl worked for you. I'm curious - why do you want to be on Ambien, rather than Benadryl?

I was a mess on Ambien, day and night. Could not take it.

Pdoc put me on temazepam. He claims Benadryl does not give quality sleep.

Temazepam is a benzo. It works well for me.

I felt groggy all day after taking the Benadryl. It helped sleep through the night but being sleepy all day wasn't worth it. With the Ambien I took one tablet last night and slept through the night. I woke up in the middle of the night for a few seconds but fell right back to sleep.

If the ambien works for you that’s great. I loved ambien but it didn’t work for me. I did some really weird things on it. So weird that I had to stop taking it.
