Hello everyone,

Today I was on FB and I am a member of a few of there mental health groups. I was scrolling down my news feed and reached one of the mental health groups.
I stopped scrolling to see what the topic was. Then a member of the group went live on video and hung herself. The admins immediately took it down. I was so upset I called the NAMI Crisisline. That was a waste of time and I will never give out their number again. The customer service rep sounded like he was new. He was trying to think of things to say. There was a lot of silence on his end when it was his turn to speak. I almost just hung up on him. I’m going to take a hot bath and turn on my Scentsy burner. Luckily I have some Haldol so I will take one after my bath.

-Best

Whew. That's about as rough as online gets. I am so sorry you witnessed such a tragic and horribly upsetting event.

Ten years ago I had a friend on a forum; we bonded and "talked" frequently online, just friendly chat. Well, one afternoon we were chatting and while we were, he killed himself. It was a terrible, terrible thing. I knew his wife and she filled me in on what had happened. To this day I think of him and...all of it.

It's bad enough that you witnessed such a thing, but to have the NAMI volunteer be anything but helpful...that's just over the top. I am so sorry to hear that the person wasn't more well-trained. What do you mean "customer service rep"? Do you mean a crisis volunteer? I'll tell you something, Coco - I really believe that the reality of the online world is severely overlooked in mental health support. I've been on forums since 1998, twenty years, and to this day when I try to discuss things that have happened to me online psych professionals/volunteers look clueless. I feel like screaming, "Get with it! 'Online' is a REAL place!"

Anyway, I am tremendously sorry.

Thank you Laurie,

PC was the first online mental health that I joined back in 2012 right after I was correctly diagnosed.
I called him a customer service rep because he did not deserve to be called a crisis volunteer. I think he missed the training classes or slept through them. I think FB made a bad decision when they allowed the feature on going video live in a group. I actually did not know you could do that. Thanks again for replying.

I'm sorry you had to see that. Having seen several attempted suicides, it left me a bit scarred and jaded. I can't imagine what you are going through.

NAMI and other "crisis" lines are mostly there to listen and get services to your location if you are the sick/suicidal person. Sadly, the rest of us really don't get the same support. I've found that others here and your psychiatric team are better suited to just be there to listen and provide support.

I am very sorry you have experienced this very troubling event on FB. I tried to look this up and instead found news stories of one even worse situation on FB. This is not the reality I want to be part of either. Looks like in some ways things are getting real bad on the Internet. No FB for me! I am surprised the NAMI hotline is not being staffed with trained volunteers. Imagine that happening to someone else? I would think of lodging a complaint so they can weed out these untrained albiet well meaning people, and get them properly trained. However, at this point, you may just want to be done with this whole situation and move on. I am a bit agatated myself right now. Anyways, take care CocoSurviving.

I am sorry you had to see such a situation. It is sad!! I hope you take care of yourself and do things to distract yourself from thinking about it. Facebook is not perfect, and it seems at times to be harmful. Please try to do something enjoyable and something satisfying. Hugs!!

OMG, I am so sorry! How horrible to actually see that. It would mess with me too and probably a lot of people even without mental health issues. Can you stay off Facebook? Some people find it hard to begin with, and that is without viewing awful videos like the one you saw. My youngest sister has no mental illness that I know of, and she has been off social media (except Pinterest) for a good 8 years or so. She said all the "perfect" & bragging posts she saw daily on Facebook made her feel so inadequate as a wife and mother. We all know nobody leads a perfect life, even people not struggling with mental illness. Everyone cries, gets upset, yells at their kids from time to time (my sister is the best stay-at-home mom I know, but she has 3 kids ages 7 and under all wanting attention at once most of the time, and she's told me she's had to go in her master bathroom and scream and cry sometimes or tell her girls Mommy needs a time-out and stay in her bedroom 30 minutes or so). Most of the time she home cooks meals, usually very healthy meals requiring a lot of prep work, but of course, she has times she resorts to frozen pizza. Nobody has the perfect life they post about online.

And upsetting videos like that...yikes! If I saw that, it would upset me too, and mess me up awhile. Can you talk to a tdoc today or a pdoc? Do you have anyone in real life you can talk about it with?

Every time I am tempted to try FB, I hear a story which changes my mind.

I am very sorry you have witnessed this.

Sounds like the NAMI counselor was speechless. You likely have more experience with your work background? I am sorry the counselor was not helpful.

Wishing you peace.

Oh, that's horrible! I'm glad the admins got that out quick.

I've dwindled a lot of FB feeds over the years. Most of them now are friends who are like me and some inspirational people I admire. I can see why people would want to leave permanently, though, with stuff like that.

My experience with NAMI here hasn't been that great, but that's more because of individuals and not the organization as a whole. I'm sorry you didn't get the support you needed.

The person staffing the crisis line would have been trained. Unfortunately, just because someone is trained does not mean they have the talent or ability required to be an effective listener or responder. Although everyone who works for NAMI in a volunteer capacity is trained I believe that just because someone is trained doesn't mean that they are ready to work with the public. I wish NAMI would be more aware of that.

One day I was on Instagram and I follow NAMI on there. This is what the post said:

Are you in crisis? Remember, you are not alone and help is available. Please reach out to trained counselors by phone or text, available 24/7 in the U.S.
@800273TALK: Call 800-273-8255
@CrisisTextLine: Text the word NAMI to 741-741

Today I called the number back and explained what happened. The worker said that the Instagram post was a little misleading. Because
there are three agencies that answers calls not just NAMI. She worked for Family and Children Services. She did apologize for the young man’s lack of training. I told her what company I use to work for and she knew of it. That I would work our crisis line during the holidays. However I was qualified. There’s a difference between a volunteer and a counselor.
