How do you know you are ready to finish therapy when you have bipolar? Or is it best to stay in therapy because it’s a lifelong illness? I know therapy is recommended with medication for bipolar. Currently I go to therapy once a week along with taking my medication. Do you stay in therapy even if relatively stable?

I do, even when stable. It gives me a chance to work on things that I cant when not stable. I have been in therapy for like 5 years. Same Tdoc. I like her. For me also I do not have stable times to much so I need the therapy.

My suggestion is to remain in therapy even if your are stable. The reason is that I think the best time to work on some underlying (and perhaps more difficult) issues is when we are stable. To work on those types of issues when we're not stable is not usually a good idea.

I am no where close to done. I figure I will stop when I have unloaded everything I have to unload and also feel confident in my coping skills and strategies. Over a year of stability is also a personal criteria.

Never being to one. Never will.
It is my personal opinion that, they pick and keep up too much **** from other people to be of any service to me. If I need to talk, I call a friend. If it is too much for a friend, I go to the garage and talk it out with the most important person in my life. Namely me.

My pdoc expects me to go at least once or twice per month even though I am stable just so I can check in with a professional. I only see pdoc every 3 months now.

I did therapy to deal with certain issues. Then it got to the point I was having to think of stuff to talk about. Now I just go to a bipolar support group twice a week for free. My case manager just retired however I will have another one soon. It’s an individual thing but no you are not required to have a therapist just because you have bipolar.
