My dad said that to me two summers ago when I was forced to live with my parents.

Do you think it's ********?

I don’t think you can break down depression so simply. I mean when I’m depressed I do dwell on past mistakes I’ve made but I don’t “live in the past”. I think your dad was trying to be helpful but fell a little short.

Hi raspberrytorte!
I don't really think much about the past when depressed. In fact, it's the LEAST time frame I think on. Mostly it's present and (fear of) future.
Thanks for this!

Ras good to hear from you! I have heard that a lot since being depressed. Depression is living in the last, anxiety in the future, peace in the moment. I too dwell on past mistakes, experience when depressed.

The headline of this thread rang out no sooner had I read it.

YES! My depression very much is rooted in my past. I had a pretty exhilarating life (likely manic) for near two years that I had to give up kicking and screaming. In comparison, the life I lead today is quite boring. I pine over the loss of that lifestyle and have ended up in the hospital so distressed when triggered by something that has brought a memory rushing back. Of course there is no way I can talk to my boyfriend about this. It would crush him if I was honest and told him I preferred a past life to this one and this in turn adds to the depression about its loss.

Depression has physiological and biochemical roots - so you're dad needs to educate himself. Yup, I think it's-

That is a quote by Lao Tzu, "If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future."

There is certainly truth to it (despite the fact it is incredibly reductionist), but it can come across as condescending if not said in the right place and right time.

Of course, it can also come across as something that sounds like it was straight out of a fortune cookie.

I'm depressed and anxious so do they cancel each other out so you can live in the present?

Reductionist and fortune cookie-esque, yes, very good points. But turns out it's not Lao Tzu, though it is frequently (mis)attributed to him. (Who knew? I didn't until I looked it up, curious about it and wondering if that was the Art of War guy). But regardless of source, I think the greatest truth to be found in it is the future/anxious part. I find that to be true (except for anxiety arising from nowhere) in the form of catastrophizing.

Yes, and then there is this. Simply thinking on the past might make us sad, but that is not the same as true depression. There's usually more to it than that --ahh, back to those reductionist properties that Anatta brought up...

Yeah, it's just too simplistic. As sayings often are...

Living in the past adds to my depression. I don't know it it's the root of it though.

My depression can be in the past, but it's more in the present and sometimes the future as well.

My depression triggers me to stressed a million on what to do now and especially the future. Not much of my past pops up.

Does living in the past cause depression, or does depression cause you to live in the past?

For myself, it seems to be the latter. I tend to dwell on the past once I am depressed.

Kind of which comes first, the chicken or the egg?
