what is the 'normal' spending? in my opinion using cash for extras and no debt is okay

I think it depends on your situation. I imagine it would be different depending on if you have kids, a husband, savings, retirement, etc.

I haven't got a wife or kids yet. i do not have enough money to make a meaningful saving, either
