I keep trying to use photos of myself and can't figure out how to do it. How do you upload a photo?

Click "my profile" on the top left. In the next page there should be a column on the left margin saying "edit avatar". It should be self explanatory after that.

As a general rule it's not a good idea to post pictures of oneself on Internet message boards. You give up a lot of privacy and it would be too easy for people you don't want in your life to use your image to find you and maybe do you harm. That's not just my paranoia talking, I'm concerned for you. Far better to use one of the avatars available here or upload a picture of something you like, e.g. scenery or animals. Just throwing that out there...I don't post family photos or selfies on the 'Net either.
