OMG, I can't believe it. H finally got a job teaching as a professor in industrial engineering at a 4 year university. It is a 1 year visiting professorship, but he was told those usually turn to associate professorships on the tenure track at this university if you do a good job. We don't know many details, what courses he will teach, the health insurance benefits (hopefully they will be better than our current sucky insurance).

He will start in January, for the spring semester, so he is going to be leaving his high school pretty soon. The new job will have a substantial pay raise. We will not be rich with this new job, but we won't be down to the penny on mortgage, grocery, medical bills, and hopefully, will have the money to fix a broken car or air conditioning problem, actually get to eat out for birthdays or our anniversary.

It has been a very long time since we've had good news, particularly pertaining to H's job.

Thanks, everyone. This is a wonderful Christmas gift. H does have to break his teacher contract, but the repercussions of that are that he cannot teach in his current district for 1 year should he have to go back to teaching high school. There are other school districts around, and though it is a rough district teach, Houston ISD is always hiring.

H will start teaching in the spring semester, so he may or may not get to say goodbye to some of his students as they are all on a different schedule because of taking semester final exams. He may teach a bit in January (the college starts 2 weeks after the high school). Or maybe he has to be at the college. At any rate, he is hoping to be able to work for pay because we cannot miss a 2 week paycheck right now. H says he loves his students, now that he's gotten used to today's average teenager. He's actually done a fantastic job as nearly all his students are at risk, and he's had plenty tell him his physics class was their favorite class in high school. You don't expect to hear that often. But H is the admin is always dumping stuff down on the teachers, so much that sometimes he is working a 60, 70 hr. week without pay for that time.

And it looks like the pay raise may be more than it is on paper as the health insurance (provided he doesn't have to pay a larger percentage into it) is way better than what we currently have. We spend a lot on health care due to my psych issues. And it's just expensive. The last time H went to see the PCP, it was $300; he had to pay out of pocket because of the way our crappy insurance works. They charged $80 for a steroid shot when the doctor had told him the shot would be less than the prescription for steroids (obviously not).

Now H is happy but nervous. He has to wait on the formal job letter to come in the mail and get it certified to get the official stuff with HR out of the way.
