I filled a prescription for depakote a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t need it right away so I brought it into my house and now I can’t find it. Has anyone ever done this before? What do I do? My insurance won’t cover another prescription so soon. Can I pay out of pocket for a month? Can I call the insurance company to appeal saying I lost it? It’s not s controlled substance like a benzo so I might have a little more leeway here. I see my pdoc tomorrow and he will write a new script, it’s just that I can’t get it filled. I found a small bottle of depakote from months ago under my nightstand which should be enough for another week or so. I just don’t want to run out.
Does anyone have any advice?

Try calling your insurance company or talk to your pharmacist. Sometimes the pharmacy can fill early and file later or get an exemption from your insurance company. Being that it is not a controlled substance I am sure they can work it out for you. If you have to pay out of pocket go to GoodRX and print out a coupon it will save you a ton of money.

I lost my anibiotic halfway through once. The dr just wrote another script and I paid out of pocket. Like Guiness said, check goodrx for a coupon.

I doubt your insurance will pay again , I’d just get a new script and pay out of pocket.
Good rx is great, we have saved hundreds when my husband was out of work. I’m sure your Med is listed , might need to go to another pharmacy , no big deal. Sorry this happened ![]()

Get a prescription for a different denomination of the drug. If your original prescription was for 30 tablets 1000 mg each once a day, get a prescription for 60 tablets 500 mg each twice a day - it will be considered a totally different prescription and the insurance will pay for it.
Depakate is not an expensive medication if you have to pay out of pocket, either. I have not heard of GOOD RX and they probably are better, but at worst you will pay what WalMart charges, which is $24 for 180 tablets 250 mg each. So if you take 1000 mg a day, then 180 tablets 250 each will last you 45 days and tide you over until next month with your insurance and you will pay $24. That is the worst that can happen.

Well I have enough for another week (Friday-Friday) and I see my good pdoc on Tuesday so I’m going to get a script from her and just pay out of pocket for a month. It’s only about $35 if I use goodrx. Seems easier than appealing to the insurance companies. As for haldol I just have to tell them I’m on a higher dosage now so that’s why I ran out faster.

You could also try asking your doc if he/she has depakote samples.

Yes, I've lost meds in the house before, but I've always been able to find them. I'm sure something will work out. It's a scary thing!

I agree with what all the others have already wisely said, wildflowerchild25. You've been given some great advice. Talk to your Pdoc about this and see how it goes from there. Hopefully he/she will be able to help. I'd suggest to contact your insurance company as well if you can. Hopefully someone will be able to help you and you'll be able to take your meds as it has been prescribed. I'm so sorry, it must be very annoying to you. Please don't give up. I'm so sorry, I wish I've had more advice to give to you. I hope things will get better soon for you. Remember that we're here for you if you need it. Wish you good luck! Let us know how it goes. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this

I've had to have my pdoc put in an insurance over-ride (not sure how that works, but the insurance paid, I just had the co-pay) when that happened to me, actually a couple of times. Not a problem when you lose Lamictal apparently, but once I lost half a bottle of Klonopin, think I tossed it in the trash with empty bottles while refilling meds. Everyone was horribly unhappy with me (thank God it wasn't Adderall, they seem to control that even more) but the pdoc still did the insurance override for me. Klonopin isn't that expensive anyway, but I'm sure I just had to pay the insurance co-pay.

Thanks everyone, I actually found the depakote yesterday! I had put it in my bathroom closet for some unknown reason. Now I just have to get y haldol script topped up but that shouldn’t be an issue because that was an actual dosage change. Seeing pdoc tomorrow.
