So I am a software engineer and I started working at a terrible company about 6 months ago. 2 weekgs ago we had a deadline that while leading up to it I was "Coerced" or "Strongly advised not to stop until done". This lead to 6 hours of sleep in 5 days with the last 35 hours having no sleep. I quickly spiraled into a mixed episode and was hsopitalized after trying to commit suicide by overdose and driving into a telephone pole at over 100 mph.
Now I am out awaiting an intensive outpatient program that I desperately need and will most likely be remanded into if I opt not to go and my employer wants answers. They have no short term disability, and my boss is "Very concerned that they were not made aware of any medical conditions I had during the hiring process" I know if I tell them what happened I will get fired, I dont know what to do. I emailed from the ER ad said I was using 5 CTO days to go into the hospital. I know, eff that job get a better one. But I am severely in need of that income. my finances are a mess. What should I do, I feel like they are responsible for this, but my Workmand comp attorney is iffy on the validity becuase its not my first attempt and subsequent inpatient stay.

I don’t know the legal ramifications of this, but I would lie or be as evasive as possible. They are obviously in the wrong, but it doesnt sound like any good will come to you with the truth.

I am sorry you're in this situation. I wish I had some advice to share, but I am here to support you.
I don't think one must share mental health diagnoses in an interview. Honestly, I think if we all did, most of us would have that as an "x mark" by our names compared to a similar candidate without a mental illness. Sad, but too often true. You didn't know they would inflict such extreme deadlines. Or did you? If you did, it may be best to know this in the future before accepting a job offer. We have to ensure our protections along the way. I understand, though, that we don't all have room, financially, to be too choosy. Also, we all wish we could handle the same severe stress as others can more effectively. I would definitely research what your rights and protections may be at your current job. |

Since you have access to an attorney, I would ask them how to respond to ""Very concerned that they were not made aware of any medical conditions I had during the hiring process..."
It sounds illegal to me as well but I am not a lawyer. Fortunately you are in a field that is in good demand and once you are well again you can look for another job. I would be cautious about working those kind of hours again. When my son was interviewing we looked up most places to get reviews from workers and could get a heads up about what to look out for.

I'm not eligible for FMLA until I have worked there for 12 months
