I just got prescribed it today for akathisia/ tremors and was just wondering if anybody has any personal experience with it. My Geodon/Zyprexa combo is working but I've become a human vibrator!

I take 60mg twice a day for hand tremors. It took a while to notice a difference but now it seems to work. I can tell when I forget to take it.

I've taken it for anxiety. It was effective for both the mental and physical parts of anxiety, but as it turns out, it wasn't very good for another condition I have (Erythromelagia, something you probably don't have to worry about as it's rare). I didn't notice any side effects, but figured it might cause trouble in the future so I got off it.

I take x2 tablets three times a day.
I take them for my hand tremors as well as anxiety.
I’ve found it works well for me.

It’s a high blood medication that has been found to work on anxiety.

I take propranolol twice a day for tremors associated with Abilify. It has worked enormously well!! I haven't felt any side effects either.

I have taken propranolol 40 mg (20 mg morn/20 mg evening) for at least 12 or 13 years now. It doesn't give me any side effects whatsoever, that I know of. I was originally prescribed another beta blocker, called metoprolol, by a cardiologist about 14 years ago for tachycardia (very fast heart beat rate), but I sort of think the tachycardia was related to anxiety and mood elevations rather than heart issues. In any case, during a psychiatric hospitalization, a psychiatrist switched me from the metoprolol to the propranolol, perhaps because the psych hospital pharmacy didn't have metoprolol? Or maybe the psychiatrist thought the propranolol would just work better for me? In any case, propranolol has been equally if not more effective for keeping my heart beat rate normal.

I would not say that propranolol eliminates all of my anxiety, but I am sure it does help to a decent degree. I still have prn Ativan for major anxiety/panic issues. Ativan works great for that. I also take a small dose of Klonopin. I'm not sure how much that does. I mostly take daily Klonopin more to prevent benzo withdrawal than anything else. I've taken Klonopin for at least 9-10 years.

The very first time I took Lithium, at 1,200 mg per day, I had very bad Lithium tremors. I was not on propranolol, or any other beta blocker, at that time. However, about four years later, I was put back on Lithium at 900 mg per day after being off it for a few years. I was then on propranolol, too, and had mild or even no tremors at all that time.

Some people are prescribed propranolol for akathisia. I assume it can help some people for that. My propranolol (at least at 40 mg) did not help with my past bouts of akathisia. Medications like Cogentin and Ativan did, on top of my propranolol.

Honestly, given how effective propranolol is at keeping my heart rate down, and it's zero side effects for me, I have no desire to ever stop taking propranolol. The generic is super cheap, the pills are very small, the benefits are significant for what it's meant to do for me. My blood pressure is almost always perfect at 120/80.

I was on it while I was IP for blood pressure issues. My blood pressure is normally low and returned to normal after they took me off Depakote. Depakote also made my heart race at 140bpm. Bad drug for me for sure.

Metaprolol and propranolol are both beta blockers, but the metaprolol (and its ilk) are cardiac specific. I took it way back when I first had trouble with a benign PVC, which is an extra heartbeat--very common but for me it felt like my heart was racing. Some years later when I had akathisia from Abilify Cogentin worked but gave me side effects. I stopped the Abilify. This time when Latuda gave me terrible akathisia (but no tremors) I switched beta blockers to propranolol, which is a systemic beta blocker. Either kind of beta blockers can help with physical effects of anxiety, like heart pounding, but I don't think a heart specific one would help akathisia. Propranolol doesn't help much when my anxiety is more mental. I've been on propranolol at 80mg now for at least 5 years. If you already have low blood pressure it wouldn't be a good idea--it would probably make you dizzy. For me it has no side effects that I can tell and works beautifully.
