I very much like the specifier system in the DSM-5. I also believe it is good that now mixed features are recognized as part of bipolar type 2. I'm pretty sure most psychiatrists acknowledged that before, anyway. Those that didn't likely misdiagnosed some patients as having bipolar type 1 when they may never have had a full mania.
Until reading the above-mentioned article, I did not know that the DSM-5 does not allow for bipolar dxs for children. That's absurd, in my view! I don't blame that psychiatrist for leaving the committee. I believe my bipolar disorder started at 14 or 15 years old. I see that as bipolar disorder and definitely not "Disruptive, Impulse Control, and Conduct Disorders, or part of the category of Depressive Disorders, called Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder." I think pediatric bipolar disorder should definitely be recognized! I wonder at what age they stop considering a patient "pediatric"? Last edited by Anonymous46341; May 07, 2019 at 03:40 PM. |
