I’ve noticed when I’m ill (sinus infection, stomach bug, etc) my mood swings like a pendulum constantly. And I have no idea what I can do to prepare. I know it happens. I know I become this frenzied mind when I’m sick. I try to treat it. I see the doctor. But 9/10 I end up having a melt down. I got attached by red ants the other day and I know I’m allergic. I get hives and a fever and joint pain. Yuck. Knowing this I prepared and used all the creams and medications to combat the poison but today I found myself losing it. I screamed like a wounded animal l, ran in to my closet, and ultimately self harmed. I haven’t done that in months.
Now I’m sitting here dressing the wounds and icing my head and feeling silly. It’s like I can’t control this when I’m sick. Like the fever in my body just knocks a wire loose. I take Wellbutrin and Valium now. That has honestly managed my symptoms to a happy medium. But dang when I’m sick and don’t feel good all my progress feels like it goes out the window. __________________ || Does the walker choose the path, or does the path choose the walker?

sorry to hear you are going through this jaymoq. I just got over a bad mixed state/hypomanic episode myself with recent med changes. my moods were all over the place and it isn't unheard of that many go through mixed states and swings when they are feeling ill or under the weather. this had happened to me when I had gotten the flu recently. it literally knocked me on my behind.
red ants? dang. that doesn't sound good. hope you mended up ok. sending hugs your way! feel better and stay strong. you can get through this tough patch. I had pretty much written myself off this last mixed episode but I am grateful that I am on the upswing now. and remember, you can always start over making progress. all the best! __________________ "Do or Do Not. Thank you. *hugs* I’m glad to hear you’re on the upswing. I am feeling better than I have... ever. Since I got my BPD diagnosis and have been on medication to address my manic episodes. I think I was feeling very anxious about feeling good waiting for the other shoe to drop per se. then this happens and I fall really hard in to this swing. Sigh. But I know it’ll get better!

Yes when you’re physically unwell the mood swings can be awful. This is partly because the body’s Lithium levels abnormally increase. I’ve been extremely unwell recently and was told to significantly increase my fluid intake. When you have the flu it is more important to stay sane with a higher fluid intake.

Interesting. So regular doses of lithium stabilize but increased levels alter? I’ve been taking lithium for about 2 months now and it has really leveled me. The mood swings when I’m sick have been a side effect even when unmediated. But I have been taking Wellbutrin for the depression side so maybe that’s a culprit.
I drink lots of water just because of my lithium meds. But it is a relief to know this isn’t uncommon and it’ll go away. I feel really silly every time I get so upset over little things when I’m sick. Looking back of course. __________________ || Does the walker choose the path, or does the path choose the walker?
