Hi, new person here. Bipolar I, 53 YO diagnosed since i was 17. Looking for support regarding drug induced parkinsonism. Any place on here that deals with EPS and the like. Really scary stuff happening with my body and the meds that help me are hurting me. Very confusing time for me. Thank you.

Welcome to Psych Central, Bipolaration. There's a blog, here on PC, you might find to be of interest. Here's a link:

Getting Older with Bipolar

I don't know if these articles will be of any consequence to you. However here are links to 3 articles, from Psych Central's archives, you might take a look at:

Metabolic and Extrapyramidal Effects of Antipsychotics

The Facts on Tardive Dyskinesia

Coping with Atypical Antipsychotic Side Effects

I hope you find PC to be of benefit.

After spending a lot of money on imaging my neurologist came down on the side of drug induced and gave me a script for cogentin. I have to say it cleared it up... mostly. My left hand still shakes some, but its nowhere near as annoying as it was before.

Have you talked to a neurologist?

Thank you everybody for your responses. Just hearing from you helps. I will check out the links and information. very much appreciated. The tremors are in my chin, my hands, legs and torso. I also h"stiffness" i guess id say and wake up with backaches, oh and the attractive slobbering. lol. the cogentin has not helped much and in the midst of this my med doc changed so I dont have an appointment with a new med P.A. til the end of September. The mental health care here in Phoenix is subpar. I am extremely frustrated with it so I went to my pcp. Met with my pcp today and got a referral to a neurologist. so i'm feeling like somebody is listening to me at last. I'm hoping a neurologist can give me some direction to go with this. Thanks again.

it can get...rough. ive had shrinks who prescribe an 'atypical,' and then...just shrug when the side effects pop up. blah. im glad the pcp came through for you.

personally, antioxidants and b-vitamins have helped make taking a full dose of Abilify a smoother ride. I had tics, a stiff gait ("Thorazine Shuffle"), etc...now I don't, and I'm still on Abilify, because I tolerate it better than anything else I've tried.

one thing that's rough, for me....adding antidepressants to abilify helps my mood, but brings with it some problems. wellbutrin wasn't a problem, but Prozac...Prozac+Abilify=tremor, for me. the psych said it has something to do with elevated blood levels of Abilify, blah blah blah...I'm on a slightly reduced dosage, now.

sometimes, a switch in the tranq helps. seroquel seems like poison to me, but lots of people swear by it, and if the dose is kept low...EPS, Parkinsonism, etc. are less frequent than most (all?) other atypicals. I don't know about the TD risk, though.

sorry about all this.
Thanks for this!
