Good luck today with knocking out a few items. The time will fly by and it will feel good to accomplish something for your well-being when you're done.

I’m with you on this one. I work more than full time and share a 6 room condo with my 13 year old son with ADHD and a tendency to collect items he thinks will be useful someday. Between that and an utter lack of energy, it is very hard to keep up with ADLs. Sometimes showering is monumental to me, let alone a good cleaning of my home. I hope to just be a bit easier on myself and form some new healthy habits. I am hoping my gym eases its restrictions so I can go use the pool. Exercise always helps and if I can reestablish that part of my life, I am better in all other areas.
I like all the advice in this thread! |

My friend, I believe that you are doing your ADL's likely just fine. It sounds like you are only having trouble with some (and not even all) IADLs. That is, "Instrumental Activities of Daily Living". The core ADL's are are being able to feed yourself, go to the toilet on your own, and dress yourself.
The advice you received are tips that have all helped me. I even recommend the music that was mentioned, but I add "dance cleaning" to that. Can you imagine what I mean? If not, I wish I could show you. The other day, the topic of simplification came up. I recommend that again. One pot/pan meals. Paper plates, if necessary. Dishes straight into the dishwasher with no "stopovers" in the sink. |

I struggle with these things a lot too :/
It brings me a lot of stress/shame. The things that have helped me the most are: 1. Planner/task list - update daily and prioritize each item (A, B, C)- schedule the big tasks on specific days 2. Utilize my “good” productive times (which are rare) to the fullest- if I am on a roll, just keep going! 3. Ritalin lol 😆 __________________ Dx: Bipolar Anxiety ADD Meds: Risperidone Tegretol Abilify Zoloft Buspar Adderall [prior meds: lithium, lamictal, cymbalta, ritalin] |

Wifey and I have started making 10-item lists per day of items that she and I would both like to see accomplished. Some of it it basic. She'd like me to shower. She thinks that will help me. I want coffee. She'd like me to take on the dishwasher etc. How I get it done is my job. We set up two days at a time, re-meet and set up the next two days. Part of this is because I'm not pulling my own about myself and about the house. Part of it is that I want to be better and get better. I don't think there's anything new, but I think the tangibility of being able to cross them out is a big part of the process. I hope it help @bpcyclist.

I have adhd in addition to other stuff and sometimes i have to bargain with myself and take things in steps. I will set the timer sometimes for just 5 minutes and work on a hot spot as fast as I can and then take a 5 minute break. Rinse, repeat. The only way for me to do anything is small steps and on/off breaks. I have a dishwasher and I hate unloading. If someone unloads I have no problem doing them. But when they are bad I put all the silverware into a pot of soapy water and take things out of the sink and stack them. Its like pre-organizing. Its much easier to load when its all stacked to load and the dirty stuff has been soaked.

This seems to have a good summary. I still struggle with basics like bathing/showering, basic hygiene, and dressing. It’s mental, not physical. __________________ It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: "And this, too, shall pass away." How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction! ---"Address before the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society". Abraham Lincoln Online. Milwaukee, Wisconsin. September 30, 1859. |

I do eat, take good care of Albert, take meds, try to rest, and exercise fairly reliably. Everything else is a total crapshoot. __________________ When I was a kid, my parents moved a lot, but I always found them--Rodney Dangerfield |

Would moving count as ADLs if it goes on for a month? I'm so worn out!

From Wikipedia:
"Currently there is no good evidence to suggest ADL skills programmes are effective for people with chronic mental illnesses. More robust data are needed from studies that are adequately powered to determine whether skills training is beneficial for people with chronic mental health problems.[20]" __________________ Wellbutrin XL 300 mg Loxapine 50mg Ingrezza 80 mg Ativan .5 mg 2x/day Propranolol 20 mg 2x/day Mania (December 2023) Mixed episode/Hypomania (September 2023) Depression, Anxiety and Intrusive thoughts (September 2021) Depression & Psychosis (July/August 2021) Mania (April/May 2019) |

Knowing that training may not be beneficial somehow takes the blame I place on myself away a bit. I’ve been working hard over the past couple years to accept my brain and accept the whole ADLs thing... __________________ Dx: Bipolar Anxiety ADD Meds: Risperidone Tegretol Abilify Zoloft Buspar Adderall [prior meds: lithium, lamictal, cymbalta, ritalin] |
