My guy cousin was diagnosed early in life with bipolar when he had his first manic episode his first year in college! He’s been hospitalized about 5 times but that did NOT prevent him from eventually getting his bachelors degree or becoming artistically creative with drawing.
Me, I was given my first camera at the age of 10. I’ve been artistically creative with shooting since that age, and then took up painting in my late 30s and found that I’m a really great painter! I had my first manic episode during covid, but looking back I know I’ve had bipolar for many years. I just learned how to cope with anger and anxiety and when people gave me lemons I always made lemonade. It’s something my dad taught me. It’s why I initially couldn’t believe I had the illness. Fast forward to present day. Me and my cousin were able to hang out yesterday and had the best day ever!! I gave him a lesson at a botanical gardens on photography and we chatted about our illness. We both want to help tear down the walls of stigma associated with bipolar and we plan on doing it in 2 ways. 1. I’m going to plan out a Ted Talk. After all I’m a teacher and used to talking a LOT. 2. We are creating our own documentary. My brother does film, I do photography, and my cousin is into advertising. Plus I have connections to the film industry in California because I’ve been on an infomercial before. So.... I may be looking for some of you who are willing to speak up. 😄 |

That sounds exciting, NaoSky! How wonderful that you'll embark on such a project with your cousin. I'm sure all here would be happy to lend a hand in at least some minor way.
Have you narrowed down what the focus of your Ted Talk and/or documentary might be? Bipolar disorder and stigma are huge topics. I'd be interested in some of the strategies you've used to "make lemonade from lemons". Also, many with the disorder struggle to achieve goals. Kudos to your cousin for achieving his despite the illness. |

Not much to add, either, but it sounds really cool what you’re doing and hope it works out for all of you!

I was a film major in college. You can go far with a topic such as this. I wish you well. Just do it.

Oh wow! Have you created anything? We know we want to accomplish this, but we will need someone who knows how to put it all together. My brother dabbles with video but never has produced a film. We are still in the brainstorming phase whenever we can get together, so I’m not sure yet when it will happen, but I definitely want to make sure it happens. There is too much stigma associated with mental illness, but I really think bipolar is one that gets stigmatized the most. Just today a student called our weather bipolar! I told him I took offense to that label and explained that it ran in my family. I just don’t think people know enough about it and don’t understand it.

For topics on the Ted talk, I want it to be about teaching and how much I love the profession and the fact that I never had a manic episode during my career, I want to go into late onset bipolar and how it has impacted my life but not my teaching. I’m exactly where I need to be to flourish and I think for every person with bipolar they can too if they are in the right career! I do hope to remove some of the stigma associated with the disorder!! Yes I am so proud of my cousin! He gives me strength knowing that he has overcome this as well. It helps keeps me on the right path. |
