So I got back from the dr today and my blood is a mess and I have an ultrasound for a fatty liver. I am not to drink soda ever again. Anything white (rice, bread, things like that) I'm not allowed to eat. My body is showing signs of
malnutrition. I have to go to a hemotologist. Most likely get an iron infusion. I hate that my body's all ****ed up but my bmi is high so my brain says obviously I'm not starving enough. My dr doesn't help because she's like a bad diet can cause cirrhosis of the liver. It makes me want to cut everything out of my diet. But that's how I got here. Tons of Drs this month.

I'm sorry that you have to deal with that. Healthy eating definitely takes an effort and is often more expensive than less healthy eating. It can be a Catch 22 because very often mental illness makes it harder to make that effort, and many with mental illness don't have the extra money to buy more expensive groceries.

Don't despair though. There are ways to tackle it. Perhaps some of us should share and support each other more in healthier eating efforts. Whatever2013 has kindly invited people to join the Overeating/Binging sub forum in the Eating Disorders forum. There is also an Exercise & Dieting sub forum in the Health Support forum. I wish both were more active. I'll try to post more in at least one of them. Probably the latter. I think people with mental health issues especially need support. We definitely have unique concerns when it comes to it.

Update: I just posted a thread in the Health Support forum's Exercise & Diet section. All are welcome there.

@Miguel'smom and all:

So sorry this is happening to you! The last thing you need is a physical problem on top of all your emotional anguish. My heart goes out to you! It's scary to hear that a bad diet can cause liver problems because the last twenty years i have surely been eating one.

Do you have a dull pain that comes and goes on your right-hand side torso towards your back? I do and i've been wondering what it is but it's not intense enough to see a doctor. I've had it for a few years. I ate a similar diet to yours in the past for years so i wonder if i also have a fatty liver. What are your symptoms?

What was the reason you went to see your doctor and discovered possible liver problems?

Ta!

Jane.

I have no symptoms. My diet consist of soda, egg, a chicken tender and side a day. No one believes me because I'm overweight. I cut out soda and gained 2 lbs. So I look like a liar so I'm keeping a journal of my intake. Im still in the stage of finding out exactly whats wrong. My head says **** it just don't eat. So this week I have the ultrasound. Next week I have the hemotologist on the same day I have my vaccine which has to be pushed out now. So I don't know if I have to get the first again or what this means. I'm trying not to go to worse case scenario but this could be very bad.

@Moose72 and all:

It's good to know that a fatty live can heal. I'm worried i have a fatty liver myself. I emailed my doctor about it but i guess it might involve an exam in-person and with COVID on, a doctor's office is the last place i wanna be!

Ta!

I also have fatty liver. I have to get a US yearly, My LFT's are slightly elevated. I have full bloodwork every 3 months since I take a Biologic medication. Being diabetic now has made it easier to drop lots of unhealthy foods. but Yeah psych meds are horrible on our bodies..

Hang in there

So Sorry that you guys have to deal with this! i agree with the other wise and wonderful posters that being on a diet while struggling with mental illness can be a challenge - not to mention expensive, perhaps! Just try to do what you can. Take things one step at the time. Hugs. Please do not give up and do not let this discourage you. Sending many Safe, warm hugs to ALL of you, @Miguel'smom, your Families, your Friends and ALL of your Loved Ones! Keep fighting and keep rocking NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, OK?!

Thank-you guys the hematologist I see next Thursday and my mind is spinning. This could be really bad or just malnutrition. I'm just hoping whatever it is its treatable. I get the US this Thursday and pdoc next Thursday. I don't think I'll have answers by then unless it's not good news. We will see.

Ive had fatty liver for forever, im 69. If i eat pizza, i am very sorry. I dont know for sure if thats why. I really cant drink alcohol at all anymore, not that i ever did. But i did like a small glass of schnapps or something at the holiday - not any more! These are fairly recent (past few years) changes. Salads and green beans taste really good now. with fatfree italian dressing, which was never my favorite!

I’d like to share although it’s not always the answer it’s a tool, the gastric bypass saved my life. I too had symptoms of fatty liver disease. One part was alcohol use the most of it was a consistent pattern of being overweight. Then after my third child when I was 28 I was very overweight about 300 pounds. 14 years ago at that time it was very hard to get insurance to improve gas or bypass. I had to do certain things over a period of 6 to 8 months and lose 20 pounds right before my procedure. It was hard but I did it and I was approved. I had a permanent version of gastric bypass not the sleeve, and I’ve kept all the weight off Over a period of 14 years. I lost all my high blood pressure symptoms, my cholesterol went down hdl leveled all that stuff and my fatty liver disease disappeared. I know what it’s like to have a metabolism and no matter what you say you eat and have people not believe you. One of the things I did in order to successfully show people that I was trying my best to not eat the wrong foods (however my portions were exceeding the actual limit ) but, I used to write down everything I eat for a month including amounts and measurements. If you show up to a doctor to be evaluated for anything like weight-loss surgery or even a regular doctor, and you have a month’s worth of specific eating that you have tracked it’s very hard for them to ignore what are saying. On the other hand I also live by “to thine own self be true. “ It’s very important to really , really get honest with yourself about every food choice and every amount that you eat. It’s very cathartic but it’s also very” real. “It makes you realize that you have to do your best to contribute to your own health and wellness.

My ALT is up (34), so I guess that means fatty liver. I've never had this happen before; my liver stuff has always been normal. I'm really scared now, because I don't know how to handle this. Is the idea that you're supposed to eat a really strict diet? The thing is, I don't eat a poor diet...my diet is pretty good, and I don't drink alcohol. But I have gained a lot of weight from Seroquel, and can't seem to lose more than 20lbs.

I was going to update everyone today but my appointment got moved our to the 14th. my hemoglobin is going up, my liver appears fine on the ultrasound. So that's good. We'll see what happens the 14th. All my bloodwork wasn't back.

Oh, that's really good news about the ultrasound of your liver. I hate when they move appointments.

My liver number is high. If it doesn't come down in the next 3 months I will have to have an ultrasound of the liver. Scary stuff. My doctor told me to try to diet. I should cut out pop. I'm glad that the ultrasound showed normal for you. Heres to hoping my liver number returns to normal.

Hi Sarah and all:

Sarah wrote:

"I’d like to share although it’s not always the answer it’s a tool, the gastric bypass saved my life."

Jane writes:

Thanks for sharing your story!!!

I'm 243.8 and just 5'3" and may eventually be staring down the same path. It's just virtually impossible to lose weight at 54 and in menopause. I've been trying like Hell for over five weeks. I didn't weigh at first. I thought i would just gauge it by the fit of my clothes, which ARE LESS SNUG.

But the lack of weekly feedback was killing me so in decided to relent and weigh. I just stepped on a scale for the first time in months yesterday and at least it didn't say 250 like last time. But it's not much to show for five plus weeks of struggling.

I'm so scared i won't be able to lose ANYTHING by just restricting. Hearing your story lessens my anxiety that if i absolutely can't lose weight thru dieting, there is still the option of gastric bypass and the possibility of permanent weight loss.

Thank you Sarah!!!
