Yes, that makes sense. The idea was whether this can be prevented to some extent with practice like that. But of course, at some point it may be that only medication helps or at least it makes dealing with things easier, and so it s more effective.

I think mania can be more easily caught early than depression/anxiety can. At least for me. The trick is in not getting swept up into the (hypo)mania before the episode is too far gone.

Having the same doctor since my diagnosis even if that means paying out of pocket at times.

My injection. It has leveled me out to more manageable swings and psychosis. It doesn't take them away at all but it's kept me out of the hospital.

My self care is pretty complicated, requiring a balance of meds, preventing stress, setting boundaries, avoiding toxic people but not isolating, prioritizing lists for discussion with professionals, etc. However, I think that regular exercise is best when start to get in trouble and as a vital part of my routine. Walking a mile every other day with the pooch now until the gyms are safe to restart water aerobics. Heard there is a chlorine shortage here, tho. That could be a huge problem for me.The Silver Sneakers program was paying for gym memberships before covid for seniors. Online exercise classes and machines just dont work for me. Good topic.

Alive99 mentions a couple very important things to learn and implement from therapy. Also important is developing more insight into the beginnings of episodes, which is sometimes hard, but with practice improves. Catching them quick is important since allowing full-blown episodes is not only painful or dangerous, but may eventually cause the kindling effect.
I wish I was better at catching early symptoms. I’m working with a therapist to try and get better at it. I’m manic right now and have been on an increased dose of Saphris for a week and a half. I know the medication will help eventually. For me, therapy is also a big help in coping with mania and depression. I’ve also started working in the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook which is really good.
