What material items have helped you the most - or do you wish you had - while inpatient??

I’ve been asked to help brainstorm for an inpatient unit…. So far ideas are books, puzzles, sound machines, yoga mats, art supplies… other ideas?? Must be safe of course. Thanks!!!

Also specific books that have helped you the most??

Last time I was in IP music therapy really helped. The therapist would bring in a large bluetooth speaker and we got to listen to music. She would play songs we requested, it was great.

Another music therapist brought percussion instruments for us to play in a drum circle. I got the tambourine. The therapist would set the rhythm and we had to follow along, then we each did a solo. That was fun

decks of cards

weighted blankets would be great (I bring mine with me and last time I was IP they still weren't so popular and I had to explain it every time I went in but they always let me keep it)

puzzle books

novels

ear plugs (they sometimes have them and sometimes don't)

Books big time. I go crazy with boredom in IP when I don’t have a book. This past time I went to my classic IP book. It’s a lighthearted book on the history of the English language so not everyone’s cup of tea, but I enjoy it. It’s the last paperback book I have since my box of books was destroyed by water in the garage.

Prompt journals might be good too. I can’t just free write or else I’ll get into a spiral of negativity, but I had a journal called “burn after writing” that was just a fun way to pass the time.

For me its books. I honestly am not really in the mood to make friends/pals as I am there a total mess. Since I can never take my Kindle I take " The fault in our stars" Or " The life of Pi" books I find reading the same books soothing.

There is also a beautiful large patio off the dining room that we go to after lunch and dinner. Its so beautiful, I especially enjoy the waterfall and Koi pond.

That sounds extremely lovely! Nature's beauty is what came to my mind, too. One of the hospitals I went to had a mini zoo, with goats and other smaller animals. They had peacocks roaming the property. It is really nice when there is a pleasant outdoors environment, even if through a Florida room type setup.

I remember during my first psych hospitalization a fellow patient with bipolar disorder gave me a book he had on the disorder. Some parts of it (mainly its med section) are outdated, but I still regard it as the best of the lot. It's E. Fuller Torrey's "Surviving Manic Depression - A guide to bipolar disorder for patients, family, ....[I forget the rest of the name.]

Animals, for sure yes. If you can get therapy animals to visit that would be prime! There was one place that I was and they’d put therapy animals on the schedule but it never happened. So disappointing.

Fidget toys, coloring books, journals, books especially about the disorders people come in with, exercise equipment (mats, balls, it would be cool if there was a gym with more equipment). One of the hospitals I was at supposedly had an aquarium (I do not even remember going to that hospital let alone the aquarium) that sounds cool, some basic musical instruments, a way to listen to music maybe CD players you can sign out headphones once you get the privilege. Hula hoops.

I have been dealing with depression and right now my concentration is not very good. I have been doing adult sticker books with animals to occupy my time.

When my mother was alive with dementia we sent up children's sticker books to do. The adult ones would have been too difficult for her.

I really want to read fault in our stars. I've seen the movie and love it (one of my favorites actually), now I just need to read the book

a stuffy (or 2, or 3). love stuffies)

crosswords too. I like things to keep the brain active, so crosswords, or quizzes, something like that is perfect for me
I also like items that are comforting to me and that I can hold if I feel I am getting anxious or need to ground. I like doing the senses one- 5 things you can smell, 4 things you can hear, etc

All that’s allowed at my preferred IP is books, coloring books/colored pencils/markers or puzzle books.

But they have coloring sheets, puzzles, a few books, and art therapy/recreation room everyday. In art you can do actual art stuff and there’s always a guitar you can play. In rec room there’s: pool table, ping pong, weights, and donkey Kong arcade game.

First time I saw that movie was in a psych unit. The nurses rented it and made popcorn for us, and we all had a good cry which was probably more therapeutic than being in group. It was so sweet and so sad…I’ve never read the book but I’ve no doubt it would leave me weeping.
