The only antidepressant I did well on that I've tried is amoxapine. My pdoc just started me on doxepin to help with sleep and depression, and I take the first dose tonight. She said there is a small chance it might make me manic. I've been having some pretty intense emotional lability lately that may or not be indicative of an incoming episode. I'm still overall depressed, but I have hours/a day here and there where I feel like I just smoked crack for the first time (euphoric, feel like I can do anything, racing thoughts, etc.)

I'm just scared it's going to make me manic like most antidepressants I've tried (but those were SSRIs). But doxepin is a tricyclic AD like amoxapine which didn't make me manic so I'm probably good, right?

(Mods please don't move this)

Good luck with the new med.

I haven’t personally tried it but your pdoc has weighed up the pros and cons and decided it’s the best med for you right now.

There’s always a risk we will go manic - even not on antidepressants.

I’m sure your pdoc will monitor you.

MuddyBoots,

I don't know much about the meds you mention but I hope they will be helpful to you. I think your feelings about the matter are completely understandable. I worry a lot when I have to make a med change. Hope everything works out for the best.

I haven't been on a tricyclic AD in so many years I don't recall anything about my experiences with them, or which ones I was on. I wish I could be so much more helpful. All I can say from my perspective is, please check in regularly because we'll tell you if you sound like you're getting out there.

Thanks Beth, I'll try to check in regularly.

As far as pdocs go weighing pros and cons...yeah, I've had bad experiences trusting that kind of logic.

I’m sorry to hear that

I tend to forget because I’ve had my fair share of bad in the past.

I had my first attack of mania when I was put on an antidepressant when I was in my forties--and then received my label of "bipolar." However, currently I take Wellbutrin and Trazodone (basically to help me fall asleep.) I also take the mood stabilizer Tegretol. I haven't had any episodes of mania or bipolar in probably over 12 years. So, it is a matter of balancing and alas, experimenting, by the doc to see what works for the individual.

I hope this new drug won't cause mania. Yes, please keep in touch. We are here to support you, Muddy, and understand your worries. It took a good while for the docs to get me on the right combo of meds.

My Dr. 20 yrs ago refused to put me on anti-depressants and I had to beg him to prescribe paxil. I responded to paxil in 1996 really well but not in 2003.
