It is a new term for me: to launch a task. I have just learned it. Apparently, it arose in the context of ADHD which I do not have. Yet, I experience this difficulty, it actually describes my challenges very well. I have difficulty launching tasks and transitioning from one activity to the next. It is so annoying.

Does anyone relate?

@Tart Cherry Jam I hear you. I have to have my lists of what needs to be done. It really helps me to at least know what needs to happen.

During depressions, for sure, for me. During stable or hypo/manic times, not really.

If any level of dread or feeling overwhelmed are in involved, a good advice from an old psychologist of mine was to allow myself the freedom to do "just a little". Another of her suggestions was to think about "How long does "X" really take?" For example, how long does unloading the dishwasher take? An hour? No. Twenty minutes? No. Actually, five minutes max! And if all I have to do is unload only the bottom rack, I will pat myself on the back. Usually I always ended up unloading the whole thing, because once I got started, a little momentum built up. Then it was a triple award to me. And it all happened in three minutes, not five.

If even getting up or starting is a challange, I found that a "starting gun" approach helped. Sort of like when runners start running when a bang occurs. Many tools can be that figurative bang, including a count down. Once up (literally or figuratively) you'd be surprised how the momentum launches the activity, like a rocket.

Laundry is what I have the most difficult time with. I have to haul it down the hall, down the elevator another hall. And the washers are tiny and you are not allowed more than 2. So my response was to buy more underwear and postpone laundry. Plus they take 6 quarters each and are so tiny!

It depends on the circumstances.
Write a book on my own? No prob. Start "write" away
Write because that book is halfway done, but it's not expected to be done for another month or so. Nope. Not happening.
Same "task" different circumstances, different start times.
But I do have ADHD, although I've had psychiatrists/therapists tell me the bipolar-schizophrenic spectrum brains are so chaotic they might as well.

Yeah for me it helps to break up the day in a chunks. And if I don't feel like doing one task, move on to another, come back later.

I relate to parts of ADHD, parts of other neurodivergent personalitys. I need to deem something urgent or I may just not do it. Making it fun also helps but is difficult
