My np is trying to convince me to go on this med but won’t let me take a small dose of haldol. Which seems easier to yall?? I cannot commit to six months of weekly labs! She’s being odd.
Should I look for new prescriber? I could always go back to my fav Pdoc office and see someone else? I’ve had two Pdocs leave in two years and one just didn’t work out. Sooo many changes. __________________ schizoaffective bipolar type PTSD generalized anxiety d/o haldol, prazosin, risperdal and prn klonopin and helpful cogentin |

Clozaril is supposed to be used as a last resort. If you have other things that work for you it is usually considered better to be on those instead of clozaril. I love clozaril and I would always recommend it as something to try but not if something else works because of the risk of neutropenia (tiny), all the labs in the first year, coordinating labs/drs/pharmacies and the side effects.
This is just me but I wouldn't want to feel pushed onto it. It needs to be something you are comfortable with. __________________ Bipolar 1, PTSD, GAD, OCD. I may go on it but my husband asked me not to. I'm just desperate for relief. I'm talking to my pdoc Monday. If you have something that works take that instead. I feel this medicine has to be a decision from the patient and family not pressuring. Why were you taken off hadol? What other options have you not tried?

Go back on haldol. Clozaril sucked. Well, did for me anyway. Couldn't physically tolerate it. Works well for others though.
Why won't they put you on haldol? __________________ The darkest of nights is followed by the brightest of days. 😊 - anonymous The night belongs to you. 🌙- sleep token "I'm scared. I'm old. I want to go home!" 😁 - anonymous |

I would at a minimum seek a 2nd opinion. If you know risperdal/haldol works then I should think that would be a reasonable choice. If 2 pdocs suggest Clozaril then I'd think more about it.

I just leaped out of bed trying my best to not pee anymore than I already had so I wouldn't have to change sheets. I fell asleep without an incontinence pad and today was an incontinence night. So I'm now cleaned up and wide awake but years of experience meant that my sheets made it without getting wet. Thank God.
I'm not trying to scare you. I don't think everyone has incontinence on it, especially if you can keep your levels low. I'm not on very much but my blood level is right at the edge of normal and too high. So I get some side effects more intensely than I might. But it's something to consider; I used to tell my mom that it was a drug that required payment outside the pharmacy. There's a reason I seem to be the only one on it who posts on here and of those who have tried it the only one who made it a long time. __________________ Bipolar 1, PTSD, GAD, OCD. Sucks your psychiatrist is being so ridiculous and not listening to you. My current psychiatrist doesn't listen to me. It's frustrating 😒 Can you get a second opinion? I know it's hard to find a psychiatrist. I'm not leaping at the chance to get a new one because this one actually prescribes benzos and I'd rather not go through benzo withdrawal right now. (Even if I know it's inevitable.)
Why is risperdal and haldol a bad combo? Maybe there's some reason. I don't know. I'm not a psychiatrist. Sucks though man. __________________ The darkest of nights is followed by the brightest of days. 😊 - anonymous The night belongs to you. 🌙- sleep token "I'm scared. I'm old. @BeyondtheRainbow
I never peed the bed at night while on clozaril... but the DROOLING. 🤤 Jesus Christ! For the love of Pete! It was ridiculous. We're talking completely saturated towel here... lol. I hated it. Liked loxapine much more... but unfortunately couldn't tolerate THAT at therapeutic doses because it made me too weak and fatigued, so boohoo. Now I'm stuck on a baby dose of that and stupid seroquel again. Sigh. __________________ The darkest of nights is followed by the brightest of days. 😊 - anonymous The night belongs to you. 🌙- sleep token "I'm scared. I'm old. I want to go home!" 😁 - anonymous |

One aspect that is in favor of Clozapine and against Haldol is the risk of TD. TD is something that scares me a lot because I have had acute dyskinesias, Parkinsonism, a lot of EPS, and all of that makes me predisposed to TD. So Haldol is much more likely to give you TD one day than is Clozapine. Clozapine in that department is quite a benign drug.
There are, of course, a lot of negatives with Clozapine besides needing regular labs. It can give someone really bad constipation. There have been lethal cases from intestinal blockage. FDA strengthens warning that untreated constipation caused by schizophrenia medicine clozapine (Clozaril) can lead to serious bowel problems | FDA So you have to be on top of that with Clozapine, really vigilant and taking measures. Clozapine did not work for me because it made me depressed to the point of inability to move my feet to walk, at the lowest dose. But it works wonders for some people. __________________ Bipolar I w/psychotic features Last inpatient stay in 2018 Geodon 40 mg Seroquel 75 mg Gabapentin 1200 mg+Vitamin B-complex (against extrapyramidal side effects) Long term side effects from medications, some of them discontinued: - hypothyroidism - obesity BMI ~ 38 |
