My doctor just prescribed a nasal spray with costicosteroids for my runny nose. I seem to remember some chatter about costicosteroids here a while back. Was it June08? I searched online for it and it said it is a hazard for bipolar, that it can trigger mania. My doctor said it was "safe" but it was just an exchange over a portal and he might have forgotten i have bipolar. Can anyone shed some light on costicosteroids and bipolar?

Hi @JaneOnceMore. I know nothing about it but this article at healthline says it can trigger responses that mimic mania Do Corticosteroids Cause or Worsen Bipolar Disorder?
I can live with a runny nose. I have seen the devastation in the life of my partner when they went into mania. For me I weigh the advantages and the possible side affects and what really matters to me. It is your decision if you think it is worth the risk. I had to take a dose of decadron when having an allergic reaction in the ER last Thursday. Don’t remember being manic or even hypomanic.

Wow-great memory! I had mentioned a doctor prescribed one to me for my POTs symptoms. Because of bad side effects, I ended up only taking half a dose once though so I'm not sure if it would have triggered bipolar symptoms for me.
My pdoc had said I could cautiously try it, but that there was the risk for it to rigger my symptoms, especially because prednisone causes me to experience hypomania. What I was prescribed was a pill-I don't know if it makes a difference if it's a nasal spray vs a pill.

I would not worry about Flonase. I have been on and off of it, for years, with no change in symptoms of bipolar. It is systemic corticosteroids (a pill, an injection) I would worry about.

Agree with TCJ -- the nasal stuff is not absorbed into the body, according to the folks who make it.
Or you could use Nasalcrom, which is a non-steroidal spray.
