I am new here, but I have been suffering from BP for as long as i can remeber and according to my mom I have always been this way. I have been touchy and angry most of the time yet i can get extremely sad in an instant. I was just wondering if I could have been born BP.

Hi there.......welcome! Have you been officially diagnosed and are you getting treatment? I am 35 and was dx last year biploar but I was also dx with borderline personality disorder when I was 21. Bpd can "mimic" bipolar symptoms so it took a while but I can tell the difference between the bipolar ups and downs(manic/Depressive) and the bpd turbulant mood swings. Don;t know about being born with it but the research definitely points to genetics so that would support the argument.

There is autism and mental health problems in my family but no bipolar that I am aware of. Go figure! Without being condescending or patronising, I kind of take my dx with a grain of salt. Don't get me wrong..... I had such a horrendous manic episode last year that I was hospitalised for 3 weeks and suffered such intense depression I didn't think I would make it. But I have fought many battles for so long, this was just another experience in life so I really don't pay much attention. I take my lithium which really works for me, I have an excellent psychologist and psychiatrist and I just do all the stuff I have already been doing.

I think nurture vs nature is a more apt approach. If you are doing all you can for the healing(nurture), you can kind of be more at peace with the chemistry(nature).

Hope that helps. Good luck and keep us posted.

welcome to pc !! well i'm not an expert but as far back as i remember i had signs of bipolar. then there were life events that intensified the mood swings, etc. later. that's an interesting question. in the long run i guess it doesn't matter cause we're bp now. i hope you will find the support here that i have. it's a warm community of people.

illnesses like bipolar have been debated as much as other things as far as "nature vs nurture" goes... but twin studies suggest that a person is born with the susceptibility to bipolar but is not guaranteed to develop it. That part is then up to their environment and nurturing.

Bipolar is a broad thing now.. from cyclothemia to bipolar I. I truly, truly believe that someday it won't exist as it is termed right now and we will have several new, more accurate dx's. i think most bipolars have many of the traits... that later, when they intensify become classed as symptoms. Are we all bipolar? Unless they invent a blood test i think it will always be a game of labels.

so... to answer your q:
no, it isn't possible according to the DSM to be born symptomatic from the get-go.... but we know that some of us are despite what the DSM says.
