I'm starting DBT at a great place soon. They also offer DBT for substance abuse. I'm going to be completely honest with my new therapist about my drug and alcohol use. I'm starting to think I may have to give up alcohol in order to reach long-term stability. I've tried quitting and cutting back several times.

Sounds like you've got some good support. Welcome to PC and to our little community of Borderlines. You'll find this to be a friendly bunch. Keep posting.

Welcome to PC!

I am also, no kidding, borderline, add, bipolar I and a recovering alcoholic. Also, add history of SA and SI. I went through a year long program of DBT, which I found to be of great help. Stopping the alcohol and pill use was also a big factor in my ongoing recovery. When my mind was clouded with pills and booze it was hard to take in what I learning in therapy. Also, substance dependence took over my emotions and made it hard for me to understand what I was really feeling.

Pnwgirl, I wish you all the best on your journey to recovery. Please continue to post here and let us know how you're doing. We're also a great place to vent frustration, and to ask questions. Good luck

Hi there,

I hope you find that the new therapy helps.

I just wanted to say one thing - you are NOT Borderline, bipolar, ADHD, or alcoholic...

you are SUFFERING from borderline personality disorder, from bipolar, from ADHD, and from alcoholism... but that is not who you ARE.

The same way that I say "I have brown hair," not, "I am brown hair."

It sounds ridiculous to say "I am brown hair", doesn't it? Because that is only one small part of what makes you, you. These are issues that you have, and that you have sought therapy to deal with - good for you! But don't let them define you. You are a unique, idiosyncratic, original person with your own goals, dreams, desires, and plans that have NOTHING to do with any illness you might have.

Good luck!
