A while back, either on this forum or another forum like this, I asked about a condition that was named something along the lines of "emotional regulation disorder" and was told it didn't exist -- not a DSM condition, just a cop-out for those not wanting the BPD label/ stigma. I have googled a lot over the past year to try to figure myself out, as well as seek professional help. Tonight -- not sure why tonight, and why I *NEVER* heard of this before, I discovered that a DSM approved (if I am to believe google, anyway) condition called "Intermittent Explosive Disorder" exists, and it fits me to a T.
I never felt comfortable thinking of myself as BPD -- not b/c of the stigma -- I am what I am until further notice, but because it just didn't fit. I don't have fear of abandonment at all. I don't get paranoid people are talking about me behind my back. I am not clingy, for lack of a better word. I don't idolize/ demonize. But I do have explosive outbursts from time to time, and, not being manic/ depressive, all signs, for lack of a more fitting condition, thus pointed to BPD. None of the therapists I have seen have yet to confirm any diagnoses for me, which has been incredibly frustrating. Why was IED never even mentioned or thrown out there? I am really frustrated, because I feel like instead of chasing a false BPD path, I could have already been working on help for IED (great acronym, huh?). Anyway, has anyone else ever heard of this or spoken to their therapist about it as a possible diagnosis? It apparently IS DMS approved, as I stated, but there's not a whole lot of info about it. I definitely fit the profile...in high school I destroyed some really nice cabinetry in my bedroom over I can't even remember what now. The condition revolves around totally overblowing a situation and getting violent, and causing damage, usually criminal damage to property. Another time, I ripped a door off of a hinge. BTW, my father has the same explosive temper, but also no other signs of BPD. He is the opposite of emotionally clingy or needy, etc., which most online screenings stress is a major sign of BPD. I hope I am not being rude by posting this here, but I don't see an IED section on this website, which is curious (maybe I missed it?) since IED affects way more people, if one of the sites I found online is to be believed, than BPD. I wonder how many other people have IED but are chasing the more popular and more well-known BPD diagnosis. I realize both disorders call for similar treatment, but still, it would be nice if the professionals in my area were more up on things so I could be done with the diagnosis phase and move on to treatment. I've had 1 suggest BPD (first one...thought I had it), then a second-opinion psychiatrist said he believed I absolutely did not have it. Another psychologist suggested bi-polar disorder, but that also was completely negated by the psychiatrist. For the record, I left the first guy because he stated I should just go on permanent disability. He offered no treatment plan whatsoever, which to me was totally unacceptable. In my opinion, a professional who diagnosis (likely wrong, mind you) someone with BPD and simply suggests the patient "go on disability" (I'm gainfully employed, too, with a great history btw) and doesn't even offer a single follow-up appt. or any type of referral is a total quack. Anyway, thanks for reading my long post. I appreciate any input. Ryan Last edited by heyitsryan; Dec 13, 2012 at 12:16 AM. |

You probably won't find anyone in this section that has been diagnosed with IED.

I've heard of it, maybe more as a pediatric disorder?
