I had severe borderline personality disorder in my teens and early 20s, under right psychiatrist I completely recovered didn't qualify for the diagnose anymore . I then went on to be diagnosed with borderline personality disorder again in my forties from having very bad PTSD . I'm just wondering has anyone been diagnose with borderline personality disorder in their youth , gone in remission for about twenty year's only to get the whole disorder back again in your forties .?? needing the mental health symptom again . I'm always reading that people get fewer or if any symptoms of bpd in their 40s and 50s and I haven't found that to be true to me .

I don't think getting better with age is true. I don't think it's based on age; I think it's based on circumstances, and, no, you're not alone. I would probably fit that category and I've met at least two others on PC who would likely qualify.

In my situation, I had BPD quite bad in my teens and my twenties. It was largely due to relationships. After my son was born, I won't say it went in remission, the traits were still evident, but they were manageable most of the time. I was able to cope. I had occasional bad days, particularly when my dad died and my best friend left, but I was okay for the most part. I didn't realize it at the time, but it was also largely due to the fact that i had no friends and instinctively pushed away anyone who could possibly become one. I was lonely but stable.

Then, last year, I got in to an emotionally charged friendship and it all came back in a matter of a few weeks and it has been difficult to control since. So, yea, you're not alone.
Thanks for this!

I agree with you I don't think this disorder is age based either . It doe's just depend where you are in life circumstances , going through a emotionally abusive marriage then separating to get a divorce. As well as a lot more other things has brought it back with a revenges with me .

I think BPD is like a volcano it lays dormant for several years till finally it peaks to the surface once more it never truly goes away we never are truly cleared or out of the clear.

Its not like magic every thing just goes away and we are normal once more. or maybe it was like this I am not sure only your the ring master to your circus.

well yes it was like this for me , the symptoms just went away , told I was cured by the psychiatrist and I believe him for I had no reason not too . I did five years later get anxiety and depression . However I got better quickly from that . I never got the bpd diagnose until 2011.
