Hello! This is my first time posting on a forum, but I’ve been a member here on Psych Central for a while. I wanted to get some advice...for those of you who got an official diagnosis of BPD, did it take a while, or did it take a few sessions for you to get officially diagnosed? I struggle with many symptoms of BPD and have done so for a long time. My relationships, self image, impulsivity, emptiness, emotional instability, etc. Several people have suggested I get assessed for it. I went to a new counselor for the first time today, and she said I do have symptoms, but that ‘’she doesn’t know me well enough to give me a diagnosis of BPD’’ and for now, she is diagnosing me with depression and generalized anxiety, until she gets to know me more to see if I fit the criteria for a BPD or other diagnosis. Has anyone else experienced this, or something similar to this? Did it take a while to get a proper diagnosis, or is it common to get diagnosed after a few sessions? In the past I’ve seen a few therapists but they weren’t experienced with personality disorders and couldn’t agree on any definite diagnosis (I got mostly suggestions of bipolar symptoms and was given meds but they didn’t help). Thanks in advance!

Hello Cecee: I cannot answer your questions. But I noticed this is your first post, here on PC, & you had yet to be welcomed to the forums. So... welcome to Psych Central (though you've actually been a member for a while.) Hopefully there will be other PC members who will have thoughts they can share regarding your concern. I hope you find becoming active in the forums to be of benefit.

I was diagnosed with bpd when I was 17 after running away from an abusive home. I was very very symptomatic then. I don’t like to really reminisce about it cause it’s traumatizing.
I was dxd by a therapist who came to my school. If she never told me. I found out I’d been dxd with it when I got my records to apply for ssdi. __________________ Bipolar 1 w/psychotic features or schizoaffective bipolar type PTSD generalized anxiety OCD celexa, prazosin, Lybalvi and prn zyprexa and klonopin |

Yes. It took me two years to get a diagnosis. I probably could have gotten testing sooner, but testing is expensive so I was limited to what my insurance covered, and it took a lot to convince my mental health professionals that I needed to be tested. It was worth it in the end though... The answer seems to be persistence, unfortunately.

I’ve had a many years journey with many doctors who have not given me any consistent diagnoses. It’s been frustrating, and I have read everything I can myself trying to figure it all out.
My thoughts are to treat the problematic thoughts and behaviors and the dysfunctional relationships in a positive way that makes things better. For me, any diagnosis has no importance and no bearing on anything for me. @featheredodachi - What is the testing that can be done? I was never informed by any doctor of any kind of testing other than the therapy sessions with them and the questions they ask me. Can you please discuss this if you can?
