I am a female with BPD.
I am wondering if I should have a female or male therapist to help me

Im not sure if the childhood trauma if from mother or father and if that effects whether see female or male therapist.

I have seen a male therapist during divorce and felt very comfortable.

I'm female and personally I'd rather see a female. But everyone is different, if you felt comfortable having a male therapist before then perhaps you would this time too.

The first time I sought therapy, in my 20s, I couldn't imagine seeing a male. I was scared of them. My second time, in my 40s, I purposely chose a male. Now I can't imagine ever seeing a female T again. I think they're colder, somehow. I have no good, rational reason. I think you just have to go with your gut.

Go with who you think that you will feel comfortable with, Me personally I could never see a male T I could never imagine talking about my problems with a man, I have only been in therapy 9 months and have a female T and she is fantastic and also very experienced.

I am a female that prefers working with a male therapist. I was molested by a female when I was a child, so that may play a part in why I feel that way.
My old DBT T said that I felt a lack of trust or respect for women.

Gender never mattered to me......... Anyone who can listen and advise well - that is who I recommend.

How they pee has no impact.

I wasn't implying that female therapists aren't as good at their jobs as men, but I personally have trust issues with women. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

I didn't really have a choice. Since my T is under government coverage you get who they give you. I am guessing that if you had a huge issue for any one gender they would accommodate you.

For me personally, gender of T is not an issue. My current T is a woman, and she has a lot of experience with BPD, so I am with the right T for me.

I prefer male t's but saying that, the transference can be pretty hard to deal with. I guess a female t would be better for me - saying that, I have suffered transference with a female t too! However with a male t it is more erotic transference that I deal with and with a female, I want her to be my mum

I guess you just go with what makes you feel more comfortable.

Thanks for all the comments and insight.

I just did not know if I had issues with my mother if a female would be better.
I also get huge transference with male t
I had a very distant cruel father so I feel that is why I get the transference. I like talking with an older male as my father never talked to me, literally only to criticise me!!

I will try male T as I still females to be cold to me.

Thanks everyone
