Hi,

I've been over on the bipolar forum for a while (I'm Bipolar Type I) but yesterday I finished my psychological testing and got diagnosed with Borderline personality disorder and also ADHD. I'm struggling with the diagnosis. I'm further along in making peace with the Bipolar diagnosis as I've had more time for it to sink in but the borderline diagnosis is really eating at me.

I've told three people, my husband who has been enormously supportive, my mom and my best friend. Both of them reacted by telli me my doctor was wrong and that there is no way I could be borderline even though I think my doctor is completly right now that I know the criteria. My mother went to far as to say that my appearance (I have pink hair) must have thrown off the doctor. She's a psychologist so I think it's ridiculous that she would say this. I told her the criteria that made the doctors make this diagnosis and she didn't respond and I haven't heard from her since.

I'm having enough trouble accepting this diagnosis and it's worse since two out of the three people that know are telling me my doctors ar stupid and I don't have it. Where I come from borderline gets a horrible reputation and is hugely stigmatized. So I'm struggling with that too.

I had a PD NOS for years. That's between you and your psychologist . No body else has a right to know.

I think there needs to be an organization, call it "PD and Proud" maybe, to speak out about issues people with PD diagnoses face and the reality that we're human, too. Modeled on gay pride, maybe. And if the DSM does away with PD diagnoses eventually and replaces it with something more than just lists of symptoms, great. But for now -- we need to pull together and speak out ourselves. Problem is, of course, our issues -- call them PD's for now -- mean that's hard for us to work together sometimes.

Regardless of your point of view, BPD is a legitimate diagnosis and because of this diagnosis I have been able to find the help I really needed for years. When my diagnosis was simply "anxiety" or "PTSD" or "major depressive" I was neither on the right medications nor in the right therapy. Years ago there was the same amount of stigma for illnesses such as bipolar and schizophrenia. BPD is a newer diagnosis, and like most new things, a large number of people are going to hate it and/or reject it because they simply will not take the time to understand it. It's like the new kid in school that everyone picks on.

I had some BPD symptoms that were REALLY helped by Dbt. In fact my Dbt teachers said I could teach it now. Dbt can help. It was created by an MD who had BPD so she could treat herself. There are medications that can help with symptoms of BPD as well.

Wow, I didn't know DBT was created by someone with BPD herself! That's fascinating. No wonder it works so well for a lot of people.

Yes Marsha linnehan, she's a genius. I'm a staunch advocate of Dbt and I do hope to teach it one day.
