Does anyone know how they differentiate bipolar and borderline mood swings? My therapist and I disagree on which dx is actually showing itself right. She said bipolar and I said borderline. Not that it really matters...just curious.

Bipolar mood swings last for longer periods of time (at least more than 4 days for each mood, although it's usually much longer than that..in some cases many months). Mania is the "good" mood, but can feel terrible for a lot of people in that they are moving faster than their bodies and in some severe cases, experience psychosis (bipolar 1). I know a good bit about it because I was originally diagnosed with rapid cycling bipolar type 2 before my BPD diagnosis. It's unclear if I do still have underlying bipolar, but it's been stabilized by my mood stabilizer anyway so my psychiatrists aren't too concerned about it since lamictal is also said to relieve mood swings in BPD as well. BPD is certainly the main issue for me.

I experience Rapid Cycling Bipolar 1 in which my moods shift from mania to depression anywhere from a few times a day to a few times a week. Sometimes I experience a Mixed State; mania and depression overlapping each other at the same time. Both of these are very hard to treat.

BPD mood shifts are emotional responses to an external stimuli, and can be manipulated / triggered / changed by environment, people, or any other kind of stimuli.
BP is primarily random (except for lack of sleep and stress that can act as triggers) and external / environmental stimuli does not affect the current mood shift. Eg. If my bf had forgotten my bday, I will tear down the house because I feel like an unimportant piece of shyt. Should my bf be playing a horrid trick on me and actually be waiting outside with a dozen roses, my bad mood instantly melts and I'm super inlove. (Although I might still want to slap him a bit) ![]() Now, if I am in a depressive BP episode and I've been waking up every morning crying, wishing I had died in my sleep for days on end, for no apparent reason (other than I have bipolar).... Well then a bunch of roses wouldn't do jack shyt. I'd still be just as depressed, except I would have pretty flowers too.
