How do I give someone space when they ask for it? How do I suppress that urge to "fix" everything by talking when in actuality I will risk smothering them?

I am exactly the same way. I just pushed my ex gf away many times when she ask for it. I even knew I was doing it. I have found much help focusing on my codendancies. Its my main focus and its helped. I attend support groups, read, and get help from a therapist. I have also looked into anxious attachment styles as well.

I'd look into codependence.
