I think pets are a valuable asset to kids, especially with CEN. It gives them a friend, unconditional love, and a reason to love. Did you have a special pet when you were growing up?

Pets are a valuable asset to anyone with emotional problems, but yes, especially children.
Yes I had quite a few pets over the years as a kid.
My first family dog was a tan curly haired poodle, named Muffin. He used to love to play ball with me and my sister - we would roll it between us on the floor and he would run back and forth trying to get it..or we would lay on our belly on the floor, with our hands under our head and pretend to cry - he would come and lick us all over the face trying to make us feel better. We also had a cat named Snuggles. I remember when she got pregnant, we were out grocery shopping and Snuggles decided to eat all the chocolate frosting off my sister's birthday cake. My mom and Dad were so mad! Larer, when Dad remarried - my step mom had cats named Munchichi, Princess Kiera, Sierra, Maximillian (he was a Maine Coon and huge). She also had an English Setter named Jessie. Munchichi used to love to play with those things that secure the milk carton jug, it was cute watching her bop it around. She was a calico. Princess Kierra would just laze around waiting on someone to pet her. She was an orange Persian. Sierra was cute because she refused to drink water out of the water dish. You had to turn the water in the bathroom sink on for her at a very light stream. She would stand there mepwing til you did. Maximillian was a tannish Maine Coon and would sit on the window sill making a noise like he was having a hard time saying "aaaah" everytime he saw a bird. Jessie was a black and white English Setter and acted as a mother to both us kids and all the cats. I also got a black cat I named Cricket because he liked to jump high, but he got out one day and ran away. I have had many others since then but those were the ones I had as a kid.

I had a cocker spaniel named Indiana. I loved him so much. We were inseparable, until I had to go to bed. Our landlord didn't allow dogs so my dog lived in my father's factory. One day my father for whatever reason opened the door and kicked him out.

I'm so sorry, that must have been heart breaking.

we never really had pets (I mean my mother wasn't really a fan of animals, and wanted to keep them out the house)

somewhere along the line, she agreed to get some goldfish.

I think the story went that she was given a tank, and it just sat their empty for weeks, until she eventually is like.. well, let's put some fish in it

I wasn't close to the fish though. they were kept at the other end of the house
I do remember when my sister was born, my mom braught her some mice- 2 mice, harvey and zack

I don't remember too much about the mice and their time with us, but I do remember my sister trapping the tail of 1 of them in the door (by accident), and insisting that our mom buried them near the seaside.

she was devistated when they died
I longed (still long) for a fluffy rabbit, or a cat of my own- maybe a puppy

sad truth is, I just can't look after 1 at the moment. maybe 1 day

Get a cat. They are not that hard to look after. Depending on your living arrangement you can make the cat an inside outside cat or just an inside cat with litterbox. You should call some of the pet rescues and see if you could come in and love the pets because you can't have one right now. Just hold them and love them and see that unconditional love come back to you. It's an awesome feeling. A puppy is a lot to deal with, they are adorable but there's the chewing up stuff, paper training them, having to walk them and take them somewhere where they can run. That's why I think a cat would be better, maybe rescue an adult cat after visiting the shelter and see which one you connect with.

Pet's bring so much to our lives but it does so deeply cut when they leave. I lost my cat this past Oct . just a week before the anniversary of Dad's death. That cat and I connected so much, it still hurts to the core and I still cry talking about it.

before I got too ill, I wanted to be a vet (among other things), I just can't stand animals suffering

I agree about those commercials...
It reminds me of the "Feed The Children" with Sally Fields programs that were on tv in the 80s. I actually get angry when I see those commercials bc I find them manipulative. They play them knowing they are triggering to people, in the hopes they can gain money from mass amounts of triggered people - and sadly - it works. Manipulating people's emotions like that. (whether you know them or not) for your own personal gain (company gain in this case) in any way is simply abusive, and it angers me it is allowed to happen amongst "charities ". If people sincerely want to give to a charity they will do so without being guilted into it. That is the same for the John's Hopkins commercials and any other charity that uses guilt manipulation to get donations. It's a form of manipulation at it's lowest and brainwashing at it's worst. It's just plain wrong.

Sorry to get off subject and for the rant, but I needed to make that point.

Those commercials are horrible sometimes. Especially the ASPCA ones. I can't watch them

Yes, I had a very special dog named Bessie. I grew up with her. She was my constant companion. I had her from age six months to ten years. A lot of fond memories.
