I crossed the street more quickly and on a shorter route. There was a car coming. It wouldn't have hit me if I hadn't done these things, but something inside me was anxious and so I imagined hugging that part of me and crossed the street as I did, softly speaking in my mind to my younger self that I would never let anything happen to her.
