Hi,

I have previously had psychotherapy for attachment issues in childhood / emotional neglect, but thought I had it under control until a recent very low spell of mental health due to employment stress had the effect of giving me cognitive distortion. During this time I had a recollection of an instance of what might be classed as
Possible trigger:
quite disturbing and I am also perturbed that when I was introduced to my ex-wife I remarked upon how, appearance-wise, she was not dissimilar to my sister.

I have started psychotherapy again and have been assessed as having complex trauma; I will be having EMDR to try and get this resolved, but has anyone experience of EMDR to share, and has anyone been in a similar situation re a sibling? How did you deal with it? We are both now in her 50s and she is married with teenage children, so I don't feel the need to blame or punish her, I think it was mainly just sexualised behaviour, something I know I exhibited also, but I'd welcome anyone's perspectives...

Welcomje! So Sorry for what you've been and are still going through! From what you described it certainly sounds like sexual abuse although i am not an expert so i can't really say for sure. i am SO SORRY that you've experienced that though. i think seeing a psychotherapist is a good idea and Hopefully it will Help you to sort it all out. i think it is normal that such event would influence your choice of partners as Well. it will perhaps take time but i think it is certainly possible to come out of this stronger. Please do not give up. Just try your best always. Sending many Safe, warm hugs to BOTH you, @MrLow, your Family, your Friends and ALL of your Loved Ones! Keep fighting and keep rocking NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, OK?!

Hi MrLow welcome to MSF. EMDR is used to help someone process events that may have traumatized them that were not processed. While we never forget things we experienced this therapy is ment to reduce the emotional challenges that a person was not able to process that can get triggered causing the person to feel very uncomfortable.

An immediate family member of mine went through a similar experience. Just so you know ... you are not alone. I wish you the best.
