Wish I had one. But, sadly, I have to maintain at least the outward appearance of being an adult.

I am asked on many forums why I dont do what others on the sites do.. post having childish things as an adult... my answer was / is always because my childhood was so traumatic, I have no wish to re traumatize myself by bringing anything that would remind myself of that traumatic childhood into my adult hood, instead if I find ways to self soothe and self-nurture in more adult appropriate ways. that does not mean Im not in touch with my child with in. everyone in normal life, at some point in their lives feels like they did as children. I just find adult appropriate ways to do things. I don't drink out of sippy cups I drink out of regular cups and glasses like adults do. besides sippy cups not being invented when I was a child, I dont crave or wish for suckling on things because of the type of abuse I went through, it actually makes me queasy and flashbacks galore to even think about my using any drinking objects that requires a sucking motion like a sippy cup. I can only imagine what going out and buying a sippy cup would do to me today now that they are available everywhere.. I also remember as a child thinking "I cant wait to grow up, be an adult". now that I am an adult, I rather enjoy the adult side of life, making my own decisions, having control over my own life and what I do in my own life is my own choosing, no one telling me I have to go to bed now, no one telling me I have to eat my veggies, no one in control of me but me and my own choices good or bad. yea no sippy cup here to remind me of childhood and being a traumatized child. bottom line Im an adult capable of drinking out of normal cups and glasses. So I do. |

I've never fancied having a sippy cup. I don't think I ever had one either. My parents, while wealthy, were pathologically mean

I’m not sure we had sippy cups when I was a baby in the 60’s. I am embarrassed to admit I was overly attached to my baby blanket. I have recently learned this was a sign of CEN. Kudos to my mother, though, for not forcing me to get rid of it. She tried and I threw such a fit, she gave it back to me and left me alone to have it forever.

Yeah. I was born in 1976. I think they gave toddlers those metal cups back then and just let us spill stuff all over ourselves

That’s awful. My mom was a promiscuous woman. Her family doesn’t know that or doesn’t want to know that but she changed as I got older. A true Christian she was. My dad yelled at us all the time but he also otherwise loved my sister and I. He was the one who raised us. Idk. It’s confusing. My dad is a good man. He just gets mad easily or at least it comes across that way. But my dad always loved everyone. He’s always helping people.

I don't recall one either. But I was a young child in the late 1950s. I do have a teddy bar and a doll from my childhood, but they're in a box in a closet.
I was glad to grow up and excape my overcontrolling mother who infantalized me. Gee, I might need a sippy cup, though, if I keep on--and an adult bib. I'm now bad about dropping my foods and drinks on myself. |

Actually, this thread turned out to be useful for me. I also have a habit of spilling things (drinks especially.) There's a nice stain on our living room couch where I fell asleep with a cup of hot tea in my hand.
Anyway, reading this thread, it occurred to me I have an older (plastic) Caribou Coffee mug that has a lid much like a sippy cup. It just has a slit in the lid for drinking rather than the little spout a sippy cup would typically have. It's also rather short & squat which makes it really difficult to tip over unintentionally. So I got it out of the kitchen cabinet where it was stored and it's now become my go-to beverage cup! __________________ "I may be older but I am not wise / I'm still a child's grown-up disguise / and I never can tell you what you want to know / You will find out as you go."
