As many of you may have heard, my doctor has decided he will no longer prescribe me codiene based painkillers for my long term pain, because it is too addictive or whatever.

Anyway, I've started taking supplements, but as it takes a while for them to have affect and I'm still in quite a bit of pain I decided to go back to my dr to ask what I could do. He decided to put me on Naproxen (also seen it called Aleve). I've just taken one, I can take up to 4 a day, and have been given something to protect my stomach because it is quite sensitive to meds.

I'm quite happy that they aren't just ignoring me and leaving me to it now. It was worth going back.

Any experience of this medication from anyone?

Hiya,

I dont have experience of the meds you are on but i was on codeine for many years and came off them in a day to take something else with no withdrawal effects at all. I have a Form of Elhers Danlos, hypermobility syndrome ~ fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. I am now on tramadol, which is still not great but it helps.

Dont let them ignore you, tell them what you think and want. My doc is great and has found out much about my condition and most of all she accepts what i know and if i have an idea she will listen.

I hope the new meds work and give you at least some relief.

Take care

Well, I took one, and I got a massive headache about 15mins later. Still have it. I will try it a couple more times, but I've not got much hope for these. I will go back if not and ask for something else.

Sorry to hear they gave you a headache, if they dont help soon maybe ask to try tramadol, the ones im taking are called zydol. Are you taking any other meds? Atm i am also taking amitriptyline and pregabalin for pain management, none of them work completely and i am still in pain, i dread to think how bad it would be without them tho!

They tried Naproxen on me a long time ago and it was worthless less potent than taking a baby aspirin. I take Voltaren for an NSAID. It doesn't erase all the pain, but if I don't take it I cannot function, can't hardly bend my knees to walk and am in excruciating pain. I've also taken Tramadol and it helped some for awhile. I seem to get immune quickly to some narcotics, while others don't work at all or have the opposite effect of making me hurt more. Methadone made me hurt more! And it made me stop breathing and that was on a tiny dose. Oxycodone helped for awhile at low dose but then it cause severe hallucinations and seem to aggravate my PTSD making me have flashbacks and nightmares. Plus it makes me itch as it does others I've talk to who take it for pain. And it makes me space cadet so I can only take it when I don't need to go out. Duragesic patch caused severe chest pain and I already have bad valve so that terrified me and I ripped the patch off and didn't try it again. Haven't told pain doc that. I hate calling his office his staff is so rude.

To be honest muscle relaxers seem to help alleviate pain more for some reason. Have you tried Zanaflex? Holy cow that's powerful even in 2 mg dose. Just don't drive on it!

I take Darvocet and three Advils to reduce my pain and the best thing my doctor has done for my pain this year is to add Prednisone to my RA & FIBRO medicine.

If you find a muscle relaxer helps, you might ask your Dr. about Flexaril. It's fairly benign (ie: non-addictive), you can function on it and it has mild anti-depressant qualities. If it does not mix well with what you are already taking, there are different variations on it that might work.

Good luck!

I take Tramadol with an Aleve. Aspirin works better but it hurts my stomach. I also take Zanaflex. Flexeril is good also. I just have to take a half does during the day or I would be a zombie. My doctor says that it is common for Fibro people to have to switch up some medicines every once in a while. Then in a month or two he puts me back on the same combination and it works better.

Remember every body is different and what works for us may not work for you and visa versa. I'm also very sensitive to so many medications that I am so afraid when I have to try a new one! Does this combo of medicines take the pain away? No! But I'm like "Arcanum", I'd hate to feel what I would be like without them!

I hope your headache goes away!
