If they were going to discount my experience, then I wouldn't tell them.

That's rare these days. It's been accepted as a true diagnosis. I don't even worry about people's reaction when I tell people I have it these days. I doubt you'll have to worry either, unless the person is not in touch with the medical findings these days. And if they aren't, straighten them out!
