As some of you know I spilt coffee on my old HP laptop/notebook and it died. Sitting at the desktop kills my back so I am now looking for a new one. I liked HP but it did go wrong awful quick. Someone else said an Acer is quite good. I don't have much money, could anyone recommend a make that is reliable?

Thanks.

Hubby just got a Dell for around $400. I've used it and I like it... except for having to get used to the huge keys! It came with Windows Vista. I like some of the changes but not all.

Hope this helps.

Actually, I think Acer makes a lot of the hard drives/mother boards ? for some of the better known computers. I don't know about UK and warranties though, sorry.

I bought through a store that has it's "own" repair center etc. It seems easier to keep it in shape that way. I have one with Vista and one with XP. I like the XP for it's own...and won't put vista on that one....

I can't be much help as I'm an Apple person and tend to like Macbooks but maybe one of these sites will be helpful:

Very useful, thank you Griffe! I have some reading up to do.

I'd love an Apple but definitely can't afford it!

Hi Ms. Peg,

I thought about getting an Acer too, but in the end bought a Dell 'cause of the name and decent price. I looked at several HPs too and thought they looked promising, but I guess you want something different from what you had before, right?

I'm not crazy about Vista either, but I'm growing to like it more each day. It took a while to get used to, that's all. I know that lots of people are buying new notebooks and actually downgrading to XP -- that way they get the best of both worlds, from what I understand.
Anyway, good luck, hope you find something you like.

-- knothead.
Thanks for this!

I've just had to replace my 5 1/2yr old acer laptop. So to have it that long with no major problems I think was good, it didn't even completely break before I replaced it, just the memory was too small for me, it began to freeze more often and lines appeared down the screen. I used it a lot too, I don't think there was a day that I didn't switch it on in all that time, well maybe one or two. A lot of my friends either have acers or Dell, they are mostly students, so a lot have gone for something reliable. I have just bought a Dell inspiron (in red!) because the price was really good and they had been recommended, and so far I really like it.
Thanks for this!

Thank you everyone.

It is out of my hands now as it is going to be a birthday/early Christmas present, I'll let you all know what it is when I get it!
