This isn't related to PsychCentral, but I hope it's okay to ask for help here. I have a program called CuteFTP, which is a file transfer program. I find that the program freezes when the splash screen appears (Wiktionary.org defines it better than I: "An initial screen displayed by interactive software, usually containing a logo, version information, author credits and/or a copyright notice."), and then I have to alt + control + delete to shut down the processes related to the program (the program does not show up in the Applications tab listing).

I emailed the company, GlobalSCAPE (http://www.globalscape.com/), and they sent a message telling me to try uninstalling and then reinstalling, but to choose "Custom" for the type of install, disabling the PGP option, which I did, but it didn't work. I sent them an email telling them so, but I haven't heard in two days (I wasn't too peeved about Sunday, but now it's going on Tuesday, so yeah, I'm angry...been working on this problem for several days now). That's why I'm trying here (and maybe elsewhere).

I really like CuteFTP, so I hope I can get it working, but if I have to, I'm going to try to get my money back ($60) and get a different one. If anyone has any suggestions to get it fixed, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.

I'm a certified computer tech so I'm gonna take a stab at this.

If you have an anti-virus on your computer (and I hope you do!) it is always wise to disable it when installing a new piece of software. It sometimes tends to block new installations. Also, after the installation is done, turn it back on and it will ask you about creating new configurations for the new software. You can wing-it from there.

I used to build websites and always used SmartFTP. It's free and when the trial period was over, I'd simply uninstall it and reinstall it. But you can try the above and see if it works for you. The reason you are not getting past the splash screen and it is not showing up on the Task Manager when you CTRL+ALT+DEL is because the program actually has not even made it into the memory yet before it is locking up your processor. Try disabling the anti-virus and see if it helps. OH. Uninstalll it first and reboot to clean out the memory and start over. Always reboot after an uninstall.

If you choose to try SmartFTP: it uses two window-like panes. Resist the urge to drag and drop. Always use the two little arrows between the panes. If you drag and drop, the file transfers will be incomplete.

Good luck!

Thanks! I'll try that...I use BitDefender anti-virus and other security.

Try using FileZilla (search google for 'FileZilla') - you want the client version. I work with FTP software (File Transfer Protocol) a lot as I used to work for a web hosting business and haave my own site.

FileZilla is great and FREE, unlike SmartFTP and various others. Oh and one to try and stay away from is CoreFTP. It freezes a LOT and eats up computer resources!

Thanks, but I really like CuteFTP Pro and I've already paid for it.

Ok, so here's where I am: First, thanks Vickie in Phoenix. Apparently, it is my firewall that's the problem. I disabled it, and CuteFTP opens up fine. But once I enable it again, CuteFTP freezes. I've added it to my Firewall's "Whitelist" but it still freezes. Any ideas why this is?
