Help! Smilie problem! Yesterday the two columns of extra smilies (the ones under "more" were getting scrambled. Several smilies swapped columns, but not exactly in the same order. Today, when I go back to smilies under "more" I get some of the "PC page"............whatever will fit into the little box. I've never seen anything like this before. Hubby thinks it may be technical. Any ideas anyone? Smilies are my bread and butter....... (See? I do get the original box of 15)
Hugs from:

Thanks for this!

Oh dear.....that really stinks!

The smilies are coming up all fine for me hon. Have you tried clearing all your cookies and temp internet files? If not, give it a try, log off and log back in and see if that helps at all.

Are you noticing anything different with your posting, like is it taking a bit longer for them to post by any chance? I'm just wondering if it could be a problem with a slow internet connection. Don't know if you are on dialup or cable or satellite etc.

I hope it clears up quickly for you!

Did you try re-loading in them or trying them in a different internet browser, because they are fine on me!

It sounds like a temporary glitch to me. Those smilies are coming up normally for me today.

I usually maximize the "More..." window to make it easier to see what's there. I don't know if all browsers have this capability, but my Firefox lets me use Ctrl-F to search for a smilie by approximate spelling. Searching for [bang], for instance, will take me to the ones called "banghead" and "headbang".

Other members have pointed out that the order of the smilies changes occasionally. That's never been much of a problem for me. If I'm looking for one that I don't use much, I may as well see what else is available too. The ones I use most, I memorized the spellings of long ago so I don't even have to look them up.

Did you happen to notice what the rest of the page said?

If I had any suspicion that it was my browser playing tricks, I'd try first closing and relaunching my browser, then shutting down and restarting my computer. Whenever a problem seems to be originating either at PC or along the Internet, it usually clears up if I wait a while -- or at worst, gets found and cleared up.

How is that smilies page acting for you today?

I think what you were seeing is normal... if you let it stay in the "little window" size. Click on the full icon for the window that comes up with "more" and you'll see a full screen of smilies WITH the PC coding (so you can learn to type them out if you wish, instead of having the little icon to click upon.)

Is this what you thought was a glitch?

Hmmmmmmmmm........I'm processing this. (senior brain here). Before, in the little window, I got fifteen smilies. Then when I hit "More" a small box opened with two columns of smilies........I have to mouse around to pick the smilie I want. (There are also word equivalents beside them.) When I'm doing this now, I'm getting a section of a PC page that has the list of Tutorials, Forums, etc. Thank you........I think I need to head back to the drawing board. grey

That's interesting.....about using Ctrl-F and a single word, to bring up the choices related. I don't have Firefox.......I have Windows Explorer. Oh, this is so embarrassing.......I hardly know what terms to use. My computer was shut down overnight but the problem remains. When I opened the little box to get a whole page, it was PC and its' list of Forums.......maybe Tutorials (?) I'll have to go for another look. Thanks for the input. When hubby gets home I'll see what makes sense to him........duh.........grey

Thanks for responding, sabby. Believe it or not, I found my way through "cookies" BY MYSELF..........and cleared them. Ta-da! But that hasn't made a difference. I do get slow internet connection sometimes but for the most part it works fine. The PC page that partially shows in the "More" box, is the page with the list of Forums. I just noticed, too, that when I go to PC to begin with, I'm not finding the "Games" thing across the top. I have to mouse around to find a way to open up Games. I have the feeling that what I'm saying isn't making any sense.......at least, I know what I'm talking about........

Ok what I think you are seeing is the minimized window of all the smilies.
CLICK ON THE EMPTY BOX in the upper right of that little window and it will open to a full page of the smilies available!

We're using different browsers so what you're describing may be different from what I'm used to. Still, as far as I know there's no "Games" thing across the top that comes from PC. In my browser I keep a bar of "bookmarks" across the top of each browser window, some of them links to PC pages. If you used to have something like it, it could very well have included a "Games" bookmark. Oh that's right -- IE calls bookmarks "Favorites," not bookmarks

That would be unrelated to the problem with smilies that you're describing except that if your bookmarks/favorites have changed unexpectedly, some of your other settings might have, too.

Here's what I find as the HTML code for one of the "More" [smilies] links:
HTML Code:
<a href="#" onclick="vB_Editor['vB_Editor_001'].open_smilie_window(smiliewindow_x, smiliewindow_y); return false" title="Showing 15 smilie(s) of 166 total.">More</a>
I'm not certain, but it sounds as if it's calling on something like javascript (or maybe a more advanced HTML function than any I'm familiar with) to open the main smilies window. If something were going wrong with that process, you might find yourself either at the top of your current page (the "#" in the code) or perhaps looking at a copy of your current page in the little window that was supposed to show the smilies.

Just in case javascript is involved, you might want to check (or have your hubby check) if it's gotten turned off or something. If it's not javascript then something else may have gone wrong with your browser to prevent it from displaying the right page in the smilies window. Before reinstalling or updating my browser, I think I'd want to get a better idea of what else isn't working right (if anything), then check again afterwards to make sure everything has been cleared up.

I do still get the smilies window normally so I'm assuming the problem is somewhere at your end. I'm not that familiar with IE because I've always preferred some other browser. It's entirely possible to download and install another browser or two (Firefox, Chrome, etc.) and keep them all available for situations like this, while using mostly the one you like best.
