For some reason, I haven't been able to change my "status" in weeks. Every time I click on it to change it, nothing happens. It may have to do with me downloading Handbrake, which accidentally came with this weird toolbar called Whitesmoke that I can't seem to get rid of. But I'm not sure, that is just a guess. Any ideas? Or is anyone else having this problem?

It looks as if changing your status requires javascript to be enabled in your browser. By any chance is yours disabled?

By the way, the mood changer also seems to use javascript. Is that affected for you too?

Edited to add: I haven't been able to find out much about "Handbrake" or "Whitesmoke" but WhiteSmoke does seem to be the name of a virus.
Thanks for this!

I can still change my mood so it probably isn't javascript. My first bet is trying to get this whitesmoke thing removed... just got to figure out how!

I would either recommend going to add/remove programs to see if it is there and to remove it, or see if there is a way to click on the toolbar (if it is a toolbar) and click something on it to remove it.

That is if you have Windows--don't know much about Macs, sorry.

Also, run virus checker, and a spamware checker if you have one. DO NOT buy them off the internet--ONLY BUY THEM OFF THE NET IF IT IS A COMPANY YOU TRUST, but I would not recommend that.

Best...

Go to "Start" -> "Control Panel" -> "Add Remove programs", select "WhiteSmoke" and click "Uninstall"

I am actually having the same exact problem... I was wondering if it had anything to do with the browser you're using? I don't know.. I'm trying to figure it out too.

For those of you having this problem -- what exactly do you do, and what exactly happens next?

As far as I can tell, you can change your status from wherever it's displayed, either at your profile or next to one of your posts. The procedure seems to be identical from either place:

-- You click on the "Edit" link next to the status.

-- Something like a popup opens with a text box for typing your new status and an "Edit" link next to it.

-- A little counterintuitively perhaps, you click on "Edit" to save the changes.

Do both of you have popups enabled in your browser or if you're blocking them, at least have forums.psychcentral.com on your "exceptions" list? I'm not sure how much difference this part actually makes btw, at least in my (older) browser. I'm supposedely blocking all popups; neither forums.psychcentral.com nor psychcentral.com is listed as an exception; but I can still change my status and (last time I checked) use the regular (popup) chat.

I click on it and nothing happens, just like siljie.

That could be it, though... I do have pop ups disabled. So maybe that's what it is... Let me check on that.

EDIT:

I just tried it with enabling pop ups and it still didn't work. I'm not quite sure what else it could be.

Have you tried clearing your cookies and cached internet views? Sometimes that helps.

I use Google Chrome, but since that seems to be quite a popular browser, I'd imagine more people would be complaining about it if it were the root of the problem. I tried the pop up thing too - still nothing. I think in the morning I will try a full fledged virus/cookie scan of my computer.

When using some "styles" of PsychCentral you're unable to change your status. (Like "Tulip", which I use) So to change your status and you use a style that doesn't work with the status application -- you have to temporarily change your style sheet.
