I am only curious but I have seen that the administrators were members when they first came here. But how can someone be a administrator or moderator?

You have to be the chosen one, decisions are made in a little white padded room with one finger up your nose and a nod and a wink, nudge, nudge...

It's a mysterious process never revealed to outsiders, but believed to involve ducks and annotation with hot oil.

For administrators it's easy. You become an Admin by starting a site.

If selecting moderators work on here like it does elsewhere I've been the press is basically the Top Man (or Woman) decides he (or she) want's a new mod and then looks at the members with the requisite qualities and upon finding one who wants to be a mod gives them 'moderator privileges'.
I think, never actually seen it happen myself.

I think they're just having fun with the subject. Moderators from what I know are recommended by members but not asking for yourself - when they need a new one they pick from those recommended. Administrators are given this title after being a moderator but not all reach this title.

I wanted to add, a member can volunteer to be a chat leader but would need to devote a certain amount of time at a selected date.

No! It happens to be a very good question. It's just that nobody really knows the criteria for becoming a moderator. I have offered to be a moderator and I have never been picked for the job. I think it is up to the team of moderators who they choose to join the team. They choose. If you want to be a chat leader I think you can just volunteer for that. Good luck!

I happen to be an admin on another forum and I was asked, I have no idea how it works here but I know some forums ask if you do have experience. I am not sure at all so I am probably wrong

I'd volunteer to be a moderator, but I'm sure nobody would really trust or want me to haha

There's no secret to the magical process of becoming a member of our community support team. It's Wizardry 101.

No, seriously... We recruit new moderators when we feel the team has dwindled to a too low number to handle the number of forums, posts and members we have, as old moderators retire or lose interest in the responsibility of the job. This happens about twice a year, sometimes more often.

Moderators are nominated by the team itself, from the existing membership. What are the criteria? We're looking for members who've been here at least 6 months, who have a good head on their shoulders, appear to use common sense, can listen to and respond to feedback appropriately, appear to be empathetic and caring in their replies to others, appear to have the time to moderate, are here almost every day, and have never gotten into any serious trouble with other members.

We do take self-nominations, and they are considered equally as others. If you volunteer for a moderator position and we decline your offer, it doesn't necessarily mean you don't have the qualities we're looking for. Sometimes we're just full up with enough moderators.

Note that seniority is not a criteria for becoming a moderator. While we appreciate all of our older members here, it's not how we choose members for our community support team.

Somewhere between 30-40 percent of the members we contact decline our invitation to join the team, usually because of time constraints or simply they don't want the added responsibility of moderating.

I choose administrators or super-moderators in cooperation and consultation with the existing administrators when we feel the team or community would benefit from additional help at that level.

Hope this helps clarify the process and removes the mystery from it.

Best,
DocJohn
