As one of the privileges of being a member of our community, we allow members to create their own private chat rooms in our chat system. Members who create their own rooms also set the rules of those rooms, as long as they are consistent with our Community Guidelines and Terms of Use.

That means that if a member doesn't want any talk of topic XYZ in their room, that is their prerogative and right. If another member comes into their chat room and starts talking about XYZ, they will be warned. If they continue to talk about XYZ or otherwise harass the room's creator, they may end up being kicked.

Members who create their rooms for only a small number of specific other members should use the password feature of our chat system to make their rooms private. It is not acceptable to have a "friends only" member-created room that's open to all, and then kick out members you're not friends with. That adds to a member's confusion and upset when they are kicked out of such rooms.

Having said that, giving members some limited tools to help police their own chat rooms (such as kicking a member out) is a part of the chat rooms functionality here. If you don't like it, then maybe being a part of a real-time chat community is not for you. (Or, at the very least, maybe member-created chat rooms are not for you... they are not for everyone, and that's just something we have to accept.)

Chat rooms are an extension of our community, meaning all community guidelines apply -- including treating all other members with decency and respect. Membership at Psych Central is a privilege, and as a part of that privilege, we do expect members to act respectfully at all times toward other members. On the forums, in chat, you name it.

Thank you for your cooperation.
