Another technical question – I’ve listed Avoidant Personality Disorder as my primary concern and when I go to see who else shares this concern (the bottom box in profile options) it throws up members who have listed Antisocial Personality Disorder. No offence to you guys, but AvPD and APD are two completely different things . Is this an error of the system (same acronym?)

I’d like to be able to see who else shares my profile concerns but can’t find a way of getting past the Antisocial link. Any advice would be appreciated, as always .

Torn, I'd just go to the appropriate forum: http://forums.psychcentral.com/forumdisplay.php?f=76 and see who is active/discussing the subject of interest to you; it could be they have the same acronym (I don't know why they do, I agree with you) in the listing because a new person might not be as savvy as you as to their having different acronyms and be confused like some do with Bipolar (BD) and Borderline Personality (BPD) disorders?

Acronyms really are tricky. It took me a while to get used to all the posts about ED around here that had nothing to do with erections. Blame the commercials, but I did see them first.

Anyway, if you go to the Member List there is a tool for searching. There is an option to go to an advanced search. You can search members by primary concern. In the dropdown menu the personality disorders and down to the bottom of the list and grouped together. There are 87 that came up for Avoidant Personality Disorder, when I checked. If that is what you are looking for. It does not use an acronym, so it bypasses that problem.

There was a bug with the Others Like Me functionality where some personality disorders did not show others of the same personality disorder. This has now been fixed.

We apologize for this problem.

Yes...BP and BPD are often confused, particularily by the new folks. I guess it's understandable. Just have to make sure YOU know what you're talking about and nicely let them know the difference when it comes up or is confused.

Bloody hell, nothing like having your own avatar be the biggest in the list and so in your face it's hard to miss .

Thanks DocJohn for fixing that, I was all set to follow Inedible's suggestion but didn't need to in the end. I'm impressed with how smoothly this site runs, thank you!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was confused by this at first!

I'm glad the problem in the system got straightened out. Thanks, DocJohn.

Acronyms aside, I think new some members arrive here confused about which term might fit them better. As in: "I avoid social gatherings. That must mean I'm antisocial."

Oh the ED usage here threw me for a loop (mainly in chat) 9 years ago! I shiver when I think that some quite naive member with an eating disorder goes to a regular site and uses ED---they will not be understood imo.

And the Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder ones are still not used correctly by some with the disorders. It works out eventually.

I work at "allowing" and not correctly or taking it personally when some use the CPTSD "Complex" PTSD tag when there is no such thing. I think it has to do with a need for letting us know they really had it bad (PTSD is one bear of a disorder!)

But I think every site has it's nuances...and stick around long enough you'll learn Psych Central's
