How private are PM's? Who has access to read? Are deleted messages retained in a database?

Yes, I'm paranoid. How private are PM's?

I'm not sure about this board, but I know most webforums the PMs can only be accessed by you and you only (or someone with your password and sign in info) and passwords cannot be seen by admins either.

I would assume it is the same here.

The forum i moderate encrypts all of the PM's in the database (basically you could think of it like scrambling the info if someone looks at it, or having it be all ****** like when you type in passwords sometimes). This means that in order for me to find a pm and read it as an admin, I would either have to know your password, or I would have to pretty much be a hacker or programmer of some sort that knew how to get around the encryption.

That wouldn't happen really any more than it would on any other site. And today's forums are pretty darn well secured.

I could be wrong, maybe this board is different but this is pretty much how i see it.

You think all the mods can read our PMs? That wouldn't be right. Wow. I never thought about this. Kinda makes you paranoid.

No, mods can't read your PMs. That wouldn't be right. Private messages are private.

PM's are not read. I've never read one, nor do I have access to read them...neither do mods. It simply doesn't happen. Basically, IF I wanted to (which I don't and never have), I can't access PM's nor can any other member of the moderation team. It's not within our abilities in our positions.

PM's are that...private messages. There's very little that we can do regarding them, though we do expect members to uphold the guidelines there as well to the extent that they should not be abused for threatening, profane, or harassing contact with another member.

The above would apply to deleted messages as well...

I would say that DocJohn has access to the maintenance end of the PM's in regards to the software and site maintenance.

If you have any more concerns regarding this issue, or any other administrative issue, please contact myself, LMo or DocJohn.

Thanks!

KD
