I've looked, but can't find and answer. What does a + after a member's name mean?

Yes, it is someone who has befriended you or whom you have befriended and they appear on your friends list on your profile page.

It is your choice to befriend people or not. It does not really "do" anything besides make it easier to find that person out of the multi-thousands of members if you want to send a personal message or interact more than just on the boards. It is not like Facebook with its public intensities or anything. Most people are not worrying about other people's friends pages and, since we all have nicknames, not like you know that much about a person when you first become friends, just that you like them at the moment.

It can be safe to have friends here... but since you're a newbie I suggest you wait until you've chatted with and read a member's profile and posts for a while. Remember this is a mental health support site and there are some members who can be toxic to other members...not everyone gets along with everyone else. It isn't anything to fear because you can unfriend someone, block their posts etc if you find their posts upset you...but it's easier to be choosier about making friends.

(But me? I accept everyone's requests! )
