I don't think it's very appropriate.

I think it is definitely an emotionally charged and evocative image. Personally I think it is illustrative of the fear and pain abused children go through and the fear they feel about speaking out, and speaks to the severity of the issue and it's consequences. It doesn't trigger me, but I can see how it might be triggering for others, so perhaps a little more consideration and caution should have been used in the choice of image.

Pretty horrid, even if it is but a 'drawing' / illustrative sketch. Disturbing picture on Psychcentral's homepage

Perhaps it's worth contacting an admin, or DocJohn himself about this.

If you're concerned about an editorial decision made on Psych Central, the best way to give us feedback about it is through our feedback email address:

talkback at psychcentral.com

That puts it into a queue that's regularly checked by people who can review such editorial issues in a more timely manner. Unfortunately, we generally don't work on the weekends, so if you find something on the weekend, it may not be handled until Monday.

Unfortunately, I didn't see the image in question in time, so can't comment on it. But I will bring it to the attention of the features editor to try and not post potentially triggering imagery to our homepage in the future. Thanks!

DocJohn

Now that you mentioned it, the image did disturb me but I put it out of my mind as soon as I saw it. I felt the same way--that I was prevented from speaking.

Thanks for bringing it up.

I can't for the life of me figure out what is going on in that photo. But I do know that I've seen it somewhere before.
