I feel that pro's and con's about a certain therapy model for a certain person belongs in the therapy section and the pro's and con's of a certain medication for a certain person belongs in the medications section. Like, a specific medication discussed, even in negative terms belong there.

But for discussing the mere existence of therapy models, medications or other treatment options.... I feel that clogs up forums, especially the medication forum. Questioning that what the forum is about should exist at all, I feel is out of place there.

Is there a way of creating a certain space for debating treatment options (not just meds)? That could give the debaters a little more space, at the same time those wanting to avoid the debating could do so with ease.

I know treatments stir up emotion and it is allowed to do so. But sometimes it drags people in who don't need that kind of talk right now, who struggle day by day with what they are committed to right now.

We're a support community, not a place to debate topics, so I'm not sure such a forum would be appropriate to our community... Unless I misunderstood, in which case, I'd ask you try explaining what you mean with, perhaps, an example? Thanks.

If you take a look at the medication forum, there are people having issues with their meds, trying others etc, there are those thinking about if meds are worth trying. All sort of personal. Which is fine.

But more and more there are posts debating the whole idea about meds. I don't think a supportive community should totally ban that view, people are entitled to be anti-med. But it is actually quite disruptive for people who try to find the right meds, to over and over get told that what mistake we make, is that we try meds at all. It is wearing. We need to be supported in our choices to take meds, or if we quit them, not to... on a personal basis. Not just be given blanket statements that no one should take meds. That meds are bad for everyone. Period. When we struggle, it IS hard to always have to see that.

When I say debate... I did not of course mean like a fight. I more mean a discussion, on a level that is not individual but more general. I'm sorry if I can't express myself properly. But in short, I don't feel that general statements about how meds don't work for anyone or that we need to focus on how dangerous meds are for everyone really belong in a section where people share deeply personal experiences with meds and need personal support.

I think what DocJohn is saying is that there shouldn't be debating as this is a support community.

OK, but then why not just delete those threads? They are clearly debating.

And thanks for explaining Peg, I can be a bit dense at times.

No not dense -jimi- Threads like that are not looked at unless someone reports them.

We rely on members to report threads or posts which violate our community guidelines. This includes people who are debating a topic, rather than offering support or advice (debate is allowed in limited form in the current news and events forum).

We'll take a look at the forum in question and remove any "debate" threads. They are not appropriate for our support community. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Best,
DocJohn

I've asked for the removal of this thread. It was unnecessary and foolish. I hope you can cater to my needs in this case and delete the thread since there is nothing to discuss.

Maybe the focus more should have been on why some people are not comfortable reporting.

Just to illustrate the phenomenon I'll link to this thread:

http://forums.psychcentral.com/psych...in-damage.html

Is that something you see as non-supporting and would like reported or is it not a debate in your opinion?

See, I am not a moderator so I can't know these things so I must ask. I'm sorry I can't know where you draw the lines. So OK or not OK?

A long time ago I got caught up in one thread and it really hurt my brain so I just had to stop going there.
