Marking Read and icons, Community Feedback & Technical Support

When we mark as read are we marking the thread we are on or everything? That is just not clear. And how do we know or see that a thread has been marked read?

Also my posts always have a yellow book beside them. Others have a white page beside them. Why is that? What do those mean?
